COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course introduces students to educational questions and issues that influence curriculum theory and
development, processes of teaching and learning, and the nature of schools. Specific topics include:
philosophical foundations of education, the teacher and teaching, the learner and learning, diversity, education
from a global perspective, and societal influences on the public education system. Students will gain an
understanding of the multifaceted nature of education by engaging critically with course readings.
Assignments and activities will support the development of students' critical reading and writing skills.
EXPECTATIONS:
Students are expected to attend all classes, read all required materials, and complete course assignments on
time. Critical engagement with educational issues will be the focus of assignments. Students are also expected
to be active participants in class discussions and small group activities.
