PREREQUISITE:
None.
This is an introductory course designed for beginning students who re not necessarily already committed to
pursuing educational studies. We will explore a number of questions and issues of importance to education
and of interest to educators today including:
• What does it mean to say someone is educated?
• What do we mean when we talk about teaching and learning?
• How do we decide what knowledge is of most worth?
• What role does education play in the development of personal identity and global citizenship?
In working our way through these questions (and others), you will be introduced to philosophical inquiry,
critical analysis, historical and cross-cultural tudies, and empirical research. Assignment will draw on and
foster your reading and writing skills, as well as your ability to express ideas orally, by way of small and
large group discussion, individual writing assignments, and collaborative inquiry.
