When a department proposes a new course it must first be sent to the chairs of each faculty graduate program
committee where there might
be an overlap in course content. The chairs will indicate that overlap concerns have
been dealt with by signing the appropriate space or via a separate memo or e-mail[attached to this form).
The new course proposal must also be sent to the Library for a report on library resources.
Once overlap concerns have been dealt with, signatures indicate approval by the department, home faculty and
Senate Graduate Studies Committee.
Other Faculties
The signature(s) below indicate that the Dean(sl or designate of other Faculties affected by the proposed new course
support(s) the approval of the new course.

SFU GDBA Bus 510 Financial & Managerial Accounting Course Guide
learning. This is fundamental to cooperative learning. This means you
must come to
class and actively follow the discussion.
Using these parameters, the
following table compares the traditional
seminar in the classroom to the Bus51 0 online seminar.
Traditional graduate seminar
Before class:
You read the textbook and the assigned
case and prepare notes
or questions.
Often teams are used at the post-graduate
level. The teams meet and prepare a team
summary of their interpretation of the case.
Note that often there is no lecture in a
graduate course as might be experienced
in an
undergraduate course.
Day of class:
Meet at the physical classroom for a
4-
hour class on a specific day. If you can't
attend, you
must rely on someone else to
share his/her notes.
The teams hand in
their summary at the start of the class.
The instructor scans them
for appropriate
analysis.
Discussion:
Generally the class responds to the
instructor's initial questions then students'
responses and questions fill the discussion
time. Solicited responses (cold
calls)
might occur by asking a student what
his/her opinion is on an issue. You listen
and take notes during the discussion.
The
seminar instructor listens, corrects
misconceptions
but generally is not
necessarily
the leader or an active
participant.
It is assumed that the
facilitator
only intervenes when necessary.
The discussion is limited to the class time
and to your thoughts at that time. You
must be able
to synthesize the issues
quickly.
Copyright BJ Edwards All rights reserved.
Bus51 0 On-line Seminar
The same preparation activities occur in an
online course except that the team meeting
may be online. Some teams rely on emails
with file attachments. Regardless of how
the team meets, everyone must keep up
with the work by reading the textbook and
preparing the assignments.
The online seminar occurs over the
extended period from
Tuesday to Friday. If
you can't attend one day, you can catch up
by reading the messages in WebCT.
A!l
discussion is archived. It is estimated ti1at
you might be online for about
6
to
8
hol!rs
in total over the discussion time block.
Team summaries are submitted
Sunday
night and reviewed Monday.
The online discussion starts in much the
same way as in the traditional seminar
except it is conducted
in the WebCT.
J·.J~:t
like in the f-2-f environment, students need
to take the initiative to actively participate
and ask questions. Therefore, while
leading questions are posted, additional
issues will arise depending on the depth
and breadth
of the class discussion which
might require further research resulting
in
Internet links. Generally students benefit
from reading messages then responding
instead
of having to listen, synthesize and
take notes at the same time. Your notes
are more easily integrated as
the ccrr.p:etc
discussion is archived in
'NebCT
and c;m
be reviewed and downloaded. In the
discussion, similar to f-2-f, the instructor
interjects only as needed.
