Proposed Program Change and Rationale
This proposed program change for the MEd Secondary Mathematics Education program is to reduce the total program
requirements from 35 units to 30 units by changing the additional requirements from 7 units to 2 units. The 2 units
requirement will, for all intents and purposes, be an elective course. By listing it as 2 units rather than 5 units it not
only brings it in line with Graduate General Regulations, it also gives students access to Mathematics courses (none of
which are 5 units).
Current Calendar Language
Secondary Mathematics Education (Master of Education) Program
Faculty of Education
Simon Fraser University Calendar 20 J2 Spring
The master of education (MEd) is a professional degree signifying advanced knowledge about and advanced training in
educational practice.
This cohort program, leading to the MEd degree in the teaching of secondary school mathematics, is offered jointly by
the Faculty of Education and the Department of Mathematics. Students pursuing the MEd (course work) option will, in
addition to 28 units of required course work, complete a minimum of seven units of graduate electives in education
and/or mathematics, and a comprehensive examination.
Admission Requirements
See graduate general regulation 1.3 for University admission requirements. In exceptional circumstances, applicants
who do not meet these requirements may be considered if superior scholarly or professional achievement is
demonstrated.

Rationale for EDUC 844 Title and Description Change
The rationale for this change is that it will give greater scope to examine issues beyond research.
Research will still be part of the course. The revised course description is wider in range and
more inclusive to allow us to take advantage of local talent available to us for teaching the course
with whatever specialization that they may bring to it. This would allow us to capitalize on
presence of visiting scholars and/or members of the mathematics department with specific
interests in mathematics education.
