SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY

FACULTY OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES
MEMORANDUM
To:
Dr. Paul Budra
Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
Simon Fraser University
From:
Dr. Dean Mellow,
Chair, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee
Department of Linguistics
Subject:
Calendar listing
of courses
Date:
January 9,2012
Three of the LING courses that are currently in the calendar have not been taught recently and
therefore are candidates for being temporarily withdrawn (or "mothballed"). We would like to
retain these courses in the calendar, with the following justifications.
- LING 400 Formal Linguistics: It is planned for 113-1 and was delayed due to a Shadbolt
Fellowship teaching exemption.
- LING 441 Linguistic Universals and Typology: It is planned for 113-7 and was delayed due to
a SSHRCC Grant teaching buyout.
- LING 471 Linguistics Practicum IV: The Co-op program staff strongly want it to be kept so
that a student would not need to take LBRL 401, the general purpose fourth course. Although a
student doing 4 Co-op workterms is relatively uncommon, we currently have 17 Linguistics
students in Co-op and LING 471 may therefore be used in the near future.
In addition, five LING or LANG courses have previously been mothballed. Those courses, listed
below, may be permanently deleted.
- LANG 298 Advanced Xaad-Kil Haida 1 (it is now FNLG)
- LING 403 Topics in Phonology
- LING 405 Topics in Syntax
- LING 409W Sociolinguistics (it is now LING 309W)
- LING 423 Topics in Morphology
Sincerely,
Undergraduate Chair

The Political Science Department would like to ensure that several classes potentially earmarked
for temporary withdrawal be maintained. Our intention is to offer the following courses in the
near future:
POL 202 - to be offered by Prof. Anil Hirain 2013-1
POL 374 - to be offered by Prof. James Busumtwi-Sam in 2013-1
POL 454 - to be offered
by Prof. Patrick Smith in 2012-3
We have a substantive interest in offering POL 423, Quebec Government and Politics, in the
next four years. This course may well be offered by a new hire that we are conducting for the
French Cohort programme.
In addition,
we would like to re-instate POL 461, The Risk Society and Risk Management, for it
to be offered in 2012-2
by Sarah Hartley.
Yours Sincerely,
Andrew Heard
Undergraduate Chair
