RE:
Criminal Records Checks for Students in Undergrad
Courses (FOR INFORMATION)
DATE: January 27, 2012
Starting January 2012, amendments to the
Criminal Records Review Act
(CRRA) require students to consent to a
special CRRACriminal Record Check before enrolling in certain courses. The courses affected are those with a
practicum component that involves working with children or vulnerable adults.
SFUis required by law to ensure that every student registered in a practicum that involves working with children or
vulnerable adults undergoes a CRRACriminal Record Check. The University must submit consent forms with payment
to the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General. SFU is prohibited by law to permit students to work with
children or vulnerable adults without a CRRACriminal Record Check. Similarly, if a CRRA Criminal Record Check
returns a determination of risk, the University is obligated to ensure that the student does not work with children or
vulnerable adults.
This requires the University to add the statement "Students must successfully complete a Criminal Record Check" as
a prerequisite
to the following courses:
Kinesiology 343 -
Active Health: Assessment & Programming
Education 401 - Introduction to Classroom Teaching
Education 402 - Studies of Educational Theory and Practice
Education 403 - Studies in Teaching and Learning
Education 404- Coursework Semester
Education 405 -Teaching Semester
Education 406 - Supervised Observation and Teaching
Education 424 - Learning Disabilities: Laboratory
Kinesiology 445 - Advanced Cardiac Rehabilitation
Sociology & Anthropology 498 - Field Study in Sociology and/or Anthropology
New courses requiring this prerequisite will include this information as part
of the normal approval process.
