SENATE SUMMARY
MEETING OF JANUARY 9, 2012
1.
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
SFU received the evaluation report from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and
Universities (NWCCU). The Chair reported that it was very positive and that some of the
recommendations have already been implemented. The President and Vice President Academic
will be meeting with the NWCCU later in the week to respond to any questions and concerns.
2.
Dream Colloquium
The application process for the Dream Colloquium resulted in two proposals being accepted for
this coming year. Each colloquium will bring six speakers to the university which will create a
program for graduate students and a speaker series for the university. Appreciation was
expressed to those who collaborated across faculties to produce the two proposals.
3.
Student Discipline Matter Annual Report (S.12-1)
Senate received the 2010-2011 annual report on student discipline matters.
4.
Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries Annual Report (S.12-2)
Senate received the 2010-2011 annual report for the Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships,
Awards and Bursaries.
5.
New School: Mechatronic Systems Engineering (S.12-3)
Senate approved and recommended to the Board of Governors the proposal to establish the
School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Science effective July
2012.
6.
Change of Degree Name: Master of Financial Risk Management to Master of Science in
Finance (S.12-4)
Senate approved and recommended to the Board of Governors the change of degree name from
Master of Financial Risk Management to Master of Science in Finance, within the Beedie School
of Business effective January 2012.
7.
Suspension and Dissolution of Mathematical Sciences Specialization (S.12-5)
Senate approved the suspension of admission to the Mathematical Sciences Specialization
program within the Faculty of Education effective May 2012. Senate approved and
recommended to the Board of Governors the dissolution of the Mathematical Sciences
Specialization program within the Faculty of Education effective May 2012.

Senate approved the suspension of admission to the major in Latin American Studies within the
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences effective May 2012.

Senate approved the action plan for the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology
that resulted from its external review.

review.

program.
The addition of GGR 1.3.2.a which outlines the criteria for admission to a graduate
certificate program.
The revision of GGR 1.3.3 which outlines the criteria for admission to a master’s program.
The revision to GGR 1.3.4 which outlines the criteria for admission to a doctoral program.
The addition of GGR 1.3.8.a which outlines the criteria for admission to a Concurrent
Bachelor’s-Master’s program.
The addition of GGR 1.3.11.a which outlines the application to complete a non-joint
concurrent graduate degree.
The revision of GGR 1.7.6.

SFU Exchange Programs (S.12-24)
Senate received information that the Senate Graduate Studies Committee, acting under delegated
authority, approved the eligibility requirements for SFU graduate students to participate in
exchange programs.
21.
Graduate Curriculum Revisions - Faculty of Education (S.12-25)
Senate received information that the Senate Graduate Studies Committee, acting under delegated
authority, approved the following curriculum revisions effective Fall 2012:
a) Languages, Cultures and Literacies (Doctor of Philosophy)
- Program: replace EDUC 866 with EDUC 867
- Course (description, grading): EDUC 809

Academic Dates 2012 – 2015 (S.12-26)
It was agreed by Senate that the motion be withdrawn and resubmitted at a future meeting to
allow for a thorough review and confirmation of the dates.
23.
Senate Nominating Committee (S.12-27)
A revised Senate paper distributed prior to the start of the meeting showed a position that was
elected by acclamation and vacancies that would be carried forward to the next Senate meeting.
