and both
of
EDUC 370-4 International and Intercultural Education
EDUC 435-4 Infusing Global Perspectives in Curriculum
and either
one Designs for Learning course and one of the following courses
or two
of
EDUC 311-3 Foundations in Aboriginal Education, Language and Culture
EDUC 367-4 Teaching Children and Minority Language Backgrounds in Elementary
Classrooms (to be deleted)
EDUC 382-4 Diversity in Education: Theories, Policies, Practices

EDUC 448-4 Teaching about Justice, Law and Citizenship
EDUC 452-8 Environmental Education
EDUC 467-4 Curriculum and Instruction in Teaching English as an Additional Language
EDUC 471-4 Curriculum Development: Theory and Practice (to be deleted)
Intercultural/International Experience
In addition to the requirements listed above, an academic intercultural and/or international experience is
also required before students complete this minor.
This post-secondary experience may be an intercultural
experience within Canada, such as a practicum experience in a First Nations community,
or outside of
Canada (this Une to be deleted).
Examples include
co-operative education placement in an intercultural/international setting
participation in an international field school program
international student exchange term outside of Canada or the United States
teaching English as a foreign language outside of Canada or the United States (to be deleted)
Experiences fulfilling the requirements of this minor will need to meet the following criteria.
successful completion of the program experience as indicated by an official document from the
supervising institution
an experience with high participatory involvement
an experience completed within five years prior to enrolling in the minor, or five years after
completing the course work for the minor
Those who successfully complete the Professional Development Program
(PDP) International Teacher
Education Module (ITEM) program,
or international field school at Simon Fraser University, will meet the
above requirements.
All other applicants must submit a report indicating the nature
of their experience, an analysis of their
learning, and a letter
of support from a person involved in supervising the experience. The director of
undergraduate programs will oversee the submission assessment. A follow-up interview may be required.

InterculturaVInternational Experience
In addition to the requirements listed above, an academic intercultural and/or international experience is
also required before students complete this minor. Examples normally include
SFU co-operative education placement in an intercultural/international setting
participation in an SFU international field school program
• SFU international student exchange term outside of Canada or the United States
• SFU PDP International Teacher Education Module (ITEM)
Experiences fulfilling the requirements of this minor will need to meet the following criteria:
successful completion of the program experience as indicated by an official document from the
supervising institution
an experience with high participatory involvement
• an experience completed within five years prior to enrolling in the minor, or five years after
completing the course work for the minor
All applicants must receive prior approval by submitting a proposal to the director of
Undergraduate Programs indicating the nature of their experience. After the experience has been
completed, a written
report must be submitted to the director including an analysis of their learning
and experience, and a letter of support from a person involved in supervising the experience. The
director
of undergraduate programs will oversee the submission assessment that will be conducted
by the cognate faculty members. A follow-up interview may
be
required.
Rationale:
1. EDUC 367 has been removed as this course has been removed from the
calendar.
2. Addition of EDUC 438 - Education and Popular Culture- explores the global
issues that transcend national boundaries- the study of intercultural
relationships, and the promotion of educational programs and activities
across borders.
3. Addition of EDUC 454 Quantitative Approaches to Environmental Education
-a new course added to this minor. It's also a
Q
option for the B.Ed. students.
Environmental Education courses complement EDUC 435 Infusing Global

Perspectives into Curriculum by considering a variety of perspectives in the
interpretation of environmental education including regulatory, socio-
economic, legalistic, aesthetic and scientific frameworks.
By promoting the
goals of global education, it makes essential addition to the list of electives
for
the minor. (Note: Students who have completed EDUC 452 cannot take
EDUC 454 for further credit and vice-versa.)
4. Deletion of EDUC 471- This course was originally included as an elective as
the instructor, Don Northey, took a global education approach in the
curriculum. This instructor is no longer at SFU and the approach is
dependent on the instructor. There are still many other electives for the
students to choose from.
5. Revisions to Intercultural/International experience- encouraging students
to be involved in an SFU experience to ensure a proper risk assessment has
been conducted.
