Program Dissolution Process
1. Program to be discontinued: Mathematical Sciences Specialization
2. Location: Burnaby
3. Although this program is offered by the Faculty of Education the majority of
the courses
are in Mathematics with a few in Statistics and MACM.
4. Anticipated final dissolution date: summer 2012
5. Reasons for discontinuance and dissolution of the program:
a. There is virtually no demand for this program. In the past five years
there
were three students, currently there is one.
b. The program is composed of coursework taken almost entirely in
another faculty, which makes
it difficult to keep up to date (e.g. when
courses will be offered, when courses are deleted and new ones
added) and advising for students is difficult.
c. There is a successful alternative program running for preparing
secondary mathematics teachers
that is preferred by the mathematics
education faculty and by students. Students with a degree in
mathematics take the secondary mathematics education minor as
part
of the PDP program, to attain the BEd after degree. Last year this was
the preferred route of fifty-five
PDP students.
6. Plan for phasing out of program:
a. Currently the one student enrolled in the program is being advised
that he will be grandfathered through. Any upcoming prospective
students will be advised
that the Specialization is phasing out.
Students intending to become secondary mathematics teachers will be
advised to see the Math advisor, the
PDP advisor, and one of the Math
Education cognate faculty members.
b. The Undergraduate Programs Committee, the Faculty of Education
executive committee and the Faculty
Council, all have approved the
dissolution.
c. The Chair of the Mathematics Department Dr. Manfred Trummer, has
approved the dissolution.
