Suspension of Admission and Dissolution of the Publishing Minor
in the School of Communication (S.11-59)
Senate approved and recommended to the Board of Governors the suspension of admission to the
Publishing Minor in the School of Communication within the Faculty of Communication, Art
and Technology, effective Fall 2011 and the dissolution of the Publishing Minor effective Fall
2013.

Research Institute for Prevention and Management of Chronic Diseases (S.11-60)
This item was removed from the agenda and postponed to a future meeting due to some ongoing
changes to the proposal.
4.
Terms of Reference for Chair in Health Disparities in Cancer Research (S.11-61)
Senate approved and recommended to the Board of Governors the revised Terms of Reference
for the Chair in Health Disparities in Cancer Research.
5.
Centre for Coastal Studies name change (S.11-62)
Senate approved the name of the Centre for Coastal Studies be changed to the Centre for Coastal
Science and Management.
6.
Centre for Hellenic Studies (S.11-63)
Senate approved the proposal for the establishment of the Centre for Hellenic Studies as a Centre
for a five year term.

PhD in Health Sciences (S.11-64)

Senate approved and recommended to the Board of Governors the Full Program Proposal for a
PhD in Health Sciences within the Faculty of Health Sciences, effective Fall 2011. An
amendment was passed by Senate to remove the following phrase from p. 28 in the Doctoral
Thesis section: (at least one must be accepted for publication at the time of the defense, and the
other two must have been submitted).

SCUP Annual Report (S.11-65)
Senate received the Annual Report for the Senate Committee on University Priorities for the
period of April 1, 2010 – March 31, 2011 for information.
9.
Update on Impact of New Scheduling Policy (S.11-66)
Senate received an update on the impact of a new scheduling policy for information.
10.
Revisions to the IELTS Admission Standard (S.11-67)
Senate approved an increase in the minimum International English Language Testing System
(IELTS) score required for admission to the University from 6.0 to 6.5 effective for summer
2012. Senate approved that the minimum sub scores of 6.0 on each of the four components
(listening, writing, reading and speaking) be included in the requirement for admission effective
for summer 2012.
Senate amended motion 3 to state: “An increase in the minimum IELTS score from 6.5 to 7.0
with no par less than 6.5 to register in Writing-Intensive Course effective Summer 2012”. The
phrase “equivalent to Foundations of Academic Literacy, FAL X99” was removed. The amended
motion was approved by Senate.
11.
Revision of the BC 12 Admission Course List (S.11-68)
Senate amended the motion to state: “That the listed non-provincially examinable BC Grade 12
courses (listed on p. 2) be used in the calculation of the admission average effective Summer
2012”. Senate approved the amended motion.
12.
Deletion of English Bridge Program (S.11-69)
Senate approved the deletion of the English Bridge Program (EBP) as one of the ways to satisfy
the English Language Admission Requirement effective spring 2012.
13.
Transfer Students Admitted to SFU with an English mark of C or C- Analysis
(S.11-70)
Senate amended the motion to state: “That Senate approve the transferable English or certified W
grade for admission and FAL exemption from C to C-“. This motion reverses a motion that was
approved in May 2010 that needed to be corrected. Senate approved the amended motion.

Senate approved the terms of reference for a project to be overseen by the Senate Committee on
University Teaching and Learning (SCUTL) and that SCUTL report back to Senate by March
2012 on the outcome of the project.

Beedie School of Business (S.11-80)
Senate received a memo clarifying that in the case of the Beedie School of Business, “School” is
to be understood as “Faculty” for the purposes of SFU policies and procedures.
24.
Report on Results of Elections to Senate and Board of Governors (S.11-81)
Senate received a report on the results of elections to Senate and the Board of Governors for
information.
25.
Date of the Next Senate Meeting
The next regularly scheduled meeting of Senate is Monday, June 13, 2011.
