i)
Response to question regarding Library and GIS (For Information)
S.11-1
Senate received a written response to the question raised in the Senate meeting on December 6,
2010 regarding the Senate Library committee and GIS resources.
4.
Report of the Chair
i)
enVISION SFU (Draft - For Information)
S.11-2
The discussion paper, enVISION SFU, was received by Senate for information. The chair
reported why this vision process is strategically important at this time. First, the government has
increased awareness for the need to expand post-secondary education as evidenced in the report
entitled “Skills for Growth: Labour Market Strategy for British Columbia”. Second, the vision
process will give the SFU community a common purpose without in any way submerging or
trying to stifle the creativity and diversity that are also a hallmark of SFU. Third, it will
communicate the message to our community that we are a university that is student-centered,
research-driven and community-engaged.
5.
Question Period
There were no questions submitted for question period.
6.
Reports of Committees
A) Senate Committee on University Priorities (SCUP)
i)
Minor in Print and Digital Publishing
S.11-3
Rowland Lorimer, Director of the Publishing Program, was in attendance to respond to
questions.
Moved by Jon Driver, seconded by Steve Easton
“that Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the Full Program Proposal
for a Minor in Print and Digital Publishing in the Publishing Program within the Faculty of
Communication, Art and Technology, effective September 2011.”
It was clarified for Senate that administrative responsibility for the publishing minor is transferring
from the School of Communication to the Publishing Program and with that change there have
been revisions to the minor. Students currently in a declared Publishing Minor will be able to
complete that program.

ii) Double Degree in Engineering Science (Mechatronics) and Business
S.11-4
Administration
Andrew Gemino, Associate Dean, Business and Farid Golnaraghi, Associate Director, Engineering
Science were in attendance to respond to questions.
Moved by Jon Driver, seconded by June Francis
“that Senate approve and recommend to the Board of Governors the Full Program Proposal
for a Double Degree in Engineering Science (Mechatronics) and Business Administration
within the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Faculty of Business Administration, effective
September 2011.”
A question was raised regarding the change in breadth requirements from two to one course.
Senate was informed that some of the breadth courses in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
have been traded for courses in Business Administration and because Engineering Science is a
credited program, there is less flexibility in allowing breadth. It was noted that originally when the
WQB requirements were implemented, it was stated that these requirements could be relaxed
with joint and double major programs.
Concern was raised regarding the heavy course load of this program. Senate was assured that only
a small number of students will apply and be eligible for the program.
Question was called and a vote taken.
