Dissolution Process
The Faculty of
Arts
and Social Sciences Undergraduate Curriculum Committee has
voted in
favour of eliminating the Minor in Gender Studies.
1. Impacted credential: Gender Studies Minor
2.
Location of the program:
Burnaby
3. FacuJty(ies), Department(s), or School{s) offering the program: FASS,
Department of Women's Studies
4. Anddpated final dissolution date:
~eptember
2011
S. Reasons for discontinuance and dissolution of the program: The main reason
for the discontinuance of the GDST Minor is prlmarilya curricular issue. The
GDST Minor
was
started at a time when Gender Studies and Women's Studies
were considered
to
be two methodologically distinct fields, thus
necessitating
different streams of study. This Is no longer the case as
reflected
by
developments in the field in the last decade, which have also
impacted the way these Issues are taught in the Dept's curriculum. FollOwing
a recommendation made In the External Review of the Dept in 2009, the
Dept
of Women's Studies has integrated its separate programs under the
name of Gender, Sexuality
&
Women's Studies. The formerly separated
Women's Studies program and Gender Studies Minor Program will now be
administered as one
coherent program, offering one major and one minor in
GSWS.
The Gender Studies Minor program is discontinued in the process.
6. Plan for phasing-out of program:
a. Students and prospective students have been told about this change
since
the
Dept's
name
change
was initiated.
b. Instructors and staff were infonned of this change when the Dept's
name change was Initiated.
No jobs will be impacted.
Co No
specific
resources are assigned
to
the Gender Studies Minor so
there is DO need for re-alJocation.
d. Other F ASS departments were consulted at the FASSCC meeting on
Nov. 18
th,
2010. This change has no impact on other faculties.
e. There will be no impact on curriculum in cognate disclplines.
f.
Timeline of activities: the chair of SCUS, the Associate VP Academic,
received a memo from Dean Pro Tern John Craig on Jan. 10
th,
2011,
asking that admissions to the program be suspended. The GSWS
ad~sor
Is no longer accepting GDST Minor declaration as of the Fall,
2010. We would like to close the program by the fall of 201lo
