RATIONALE FOR INTRODUCTION OF THIS COURSE:
Originally there was only one upper level Health Ethics course, HSCI 319W, cross listed
with PHIL 319. This course did not have philosophy prerequisites. FHS then
introduced HSCI320 with PHIL 120Was a prerequisite. This course is more congruent
with upper-level Philosophy courses in having a philosophy pre-requisite. Thus. we are
deleting PHIL 319 and introducing a new course number to be the upper-level course
cross-listed with FHS. Since Philosophy already has a course numbered 320, we are
using PHIL 327 as the number for this course. FHS has agreed to change HSCI 320 to
HSC1327. We are deleting PHIL 319 and creating PHIL 327 to be cross listed with (the
renumbered) HSCI 327.
SCHEDULING AND ENROLMENT INFORMATION:
Indicate effective term/year course would first be offered and planned frequency of
offering
thereafter:
A
version of this course is being offered Spring 2011 as a selected topics course. The
planned frequency thereafter will be approximately once per
5-6
semesters.
NOTE: There is a two-term wait for implementation of any new course.
Waiver required: Yes:

RATIONALE:
PHIL 319Wwas crosslisted with HSCI 319W, which had no philosophy prerequite. PHS has
recently created an alternative version of this course which has PHIL 120W as a prerequisite
(thereby putting it in line with all other PHIL 300-level courses). We are thus deleting PHIL
319W and replacing it with PHIL 327, which will be crosslisted with the new HSCI course.
If
this course replicates the content of a previously approved course to the extent that students
should not receive credit for both courses, this should be noted in the prerequisite.
