oversight in our last curriculum change in 2007 and needs to be corrected to
reflect the current courses offered at SlAT. Conversely, IAT 380,381, 480,
and 481 are being used in our current curriculum and need to be recognized.
Notes:
- The rationale to having 2 courses count towards the B.A. degrees, and 2
that count towards the B.Sc. is that they are different degrees requiring
different
courses for graduation. As such, it is felt that having separate" Arts"
and uScience" special topics courses is necessary for those pursuing our
degrees.
-
IAT 480" does not have (Arts) affixed to the end of it. This is the name of the
course officially in the university calendar as approved by SCUS. We will be
submitting a course change form to change the title of this course in Fall
2010, at which point the Calendar language will be automatically updated to
reflect the new course title.
- These
are listed as "Upper Division Requirements> Additional
Requirements'J.
This is the terminology used by the university calendar as
vie,ved at http://students.sfu.calcalendar.Itis not intended to say these are
required courses; rather, they are to. be viewed as one of a list of options
towards either the B.A. or B.Sc., as shown in the calendar.
-
\Vhen we do offer special topics courses, they get a special topic coded by
the Registrar's office. An example would be:
(t
IAT 380-3 Special Topics in Interactive Arts and Technology (Arts) - ST:
Sound Design.
There is a distinction between Arts courses and Science courses for
special topics.
This is intentional and is necessary because we must have
differentiation
between our B.A. and B.Sc. degrees.

At its meeting of October
13 2010,
the School of Interactive Arts & Technology
approved
the attached curricular revisions:
Course Change Proposal: Title and description changes for IAT
403
and IAT
405.
Degree Requirement Change Proposal: Replace SlAT B.Sc. requirements IAT
402
and
404
with IAT
403
and JAT
405.
This change must be made for each of
the following: IAT B.Sc. Major, IAT B.Sc. Honors, CMNS-IAT B.Sc. Joint Major,
and the IAT-BUS B.Sc. Joint Major.
Course Deletion Proposal: Delete IAT
402
and
404.
Currently SlAT's design studio courses I and II are each divided into two offerings:
IAT
402 -
Interdisciplinary Design Studio I (Science)
IAT
403 -
Interdisciplinary Design Studio I (Arts)
IAT
404 -
Interdisciplinary Design Studio II (Science)
IAT
405 -
Interdisciplinary Design Studio II (Arts)
SlAT B.Sc. students enroll in the Science designated sections and SlAT B.A. students
enroll in the Arts designated sections. However, IAT
402/3
and IAT
404/5
are offered
in combined sections and do
not differ in content. Therefore SlAT's course listings
and degree requirements should reflect this. We are proposing to remove rAT
402
and
404
and use rAT
403
and
405
to satisfy degree requirements for all SlAT Majors, Joint
Majors and Honors students.
The requested
effective date of these changes is Fall
2011.
Please place this/these proposa I(s) on the agenda of the next meeting of the Faculty
of Communication, Art and Technology Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.
