The following is the text of a memo irom Dr. C. L. Hamilton,
Director of University Affairs, to the President, dated January 4, 1967.
"For the past year University representatives have participated
in discussions
with U. B. C. and the University of Victoria on the
- subject ofntinuing education and extension work. As yet, however,
no official University policy has been established in this area.
.Because the University owes its first responsibility to its full
time graduate and undergraduate students, whose requirements will
utilize virtually all of the foreseeable University resources, and
because U. B. C. and University of Victoria both offer extension courses
for credit and non-credit, it has been suggested that the
following
policies be recommended to Senate for adoption:
1) that Simon Fraser University establish no formal program
for extension work until the present undergraduate and
graduate curriculum is Lullydeveloped;
II)
that
Simon
Fraser University has no objection to faculty
participating in courses offered by the U. B. C. extension.
. department and that, where possible, University facilities
will be made available to the U. B. C. extension department
on an appropriate cost-sharing basis."
The President made the following comment on this matter:
"The only thought I could add to those contained in Dr. Hamilton's
memo is
that I think that those members of faculty who are engaging
in
extension work, under the aegis of U. B. C., assuming the policy is
approved, should keep their Heads of Departments informed and the
Heads in turn keep the Director of University Affairs informed, so that
we may have an ongoing summary of the extent of involvement and so
that the Jparteab Head may satisfy himself from time to time that
U. B. C. is not making unnecessartly heavy demands on our faculty, to
such an extent that it might interfere with their regularly assigned duties."
