    Dear Dr. McTaggart-Cowan:
The Education Committee of the Canadian Mental Health Association's British
Columbia Division is concerned about the lack of mandatory courses in mental
health offered by the teacher training faculties In our Universities.
When this was brought to the attention of the Board of Directors, they directed.
me to write to the Senate of each University to request that the present courses
as they relate to mental health, be reviewed by the appropriate bodies at the
Universities. Such reviews would determine the courses that a student has to
have during teacher training now and we hope, would result in changing present
    optional courses into mandatory ones.
We are certain that you appreciate both the importance of having the teacher
as well equipped as possible to handle the mild manifestations of emotional
turmoil in children and the value of her being able to determine when a
    child needs professional help.
We are aware of the extreme shortage of mental health personnel in the com
inunity to whom a harassed teacher can refer a child, and our Association is
    conducting
a continuous social action program, for more training courses and
    better s:aies.
The leadership that the Faculties of Education can give in initiating, their
own programs now need not wait for the results of this campaign.
The Canadian Mental Health Association. therefore 'urges you to review your
present mandatory rental health courses in your teacher training programs
with a vw to increasing thesA requirements to an appropriate level.
    Respeç/{,iti/ yours,
    Geoige Kenwood,1/
