I. Introduction
Liaison with the High Schools in British Columbia is an important part
of the Registrar's responsibilities. The University must be concerned with
the attitudes of the Secondary School Principals, Guidance Officers and
Teachers toward the academic programs and standards at the university. We
must also ensure that we are aware of changes in the Secondary Schools as
they relate to the University. More generally, I believe Universities have
a clear obligation to present themselves to the students in Secondary
Schools in a comprehensible and forthright manner in order to encourage students
to sort out their educational goals, and to assist them in this.
The Registrar's Office co-ordinates;- visits to schools by faculty,
students and staff of Simon Fraser, visits of school groups to the campus,
and special projects such as participation in the Rotary Club's 'Signposts
to Careers' exhibition at the Pacific National Exhibition in April.
It should be observed here that we have received excellent co-operation
• from the faculty and the students. The students particularly should be
mentioned. They are-very keen on visiting their old schools and talking
to the students who will follow them to University. This -sort of 'horses
mouth"advice is invaluable for the young man or woman in grade twelve
trying to make up his or her mind whether or not to go to University.
We intend to step up our visits to schools in the coming year. There
is some chance that the Department of Education will move towards a
system of examination grading which relies more heavily on the school's
recommendations. This-has certainly been the trend in other provinces.
If this does happen in British Columbia it will be even more essential
that the University is well acquainted with a large number of schools so
that it can properly evaluate each school's recommendations on borderline
applicants for admission.
