    Election of Faculty

    It was noted by the President that at a meeting of Joint Faculty on
    23 March, 1967, it had been agreed that the three no

    Faculty members on
    Senate should be elected one from each Faculty.
    2.
    Honorary Degrees for Congregation May 20th 1967
    The President reported that Dr. Marshall McLuhaa of Toronto,
    Dr. Leon Koerner of Vancouver and Mrs. Mad
    g
    e Hogarth of Vancouver would
    be the recipients of Honorary Degrees. Dr. McLuhan will be the Congregation
    Speaker.
    3. Graduation Diplomas
    Senate accepted a recommendation from the University Committee
    on Graphics and Design to select the following as the University Graduation
    Diploma:
    The Diploma would be in horizontal format. The University
    crest is displayed in the fort of a shaded pattern over which
    the type is printed. The University sal is embossed over
    the signatures. The folder to contain tha diploma is a
    shade of red and grey ribbons will be usezl to hold the diploma
    within the folder.
    The design accepted by the Senate can be seen in the Ceremonies Office,
    Room 404, Library Building - Academic Services.
    It was further agreed that the wording on the Diploma would make a
    distinction between the student who graduates with a B.A. from an Honors
    program and one who graduates from a General program. It was agreed that
    the Master's degree Diplomas would not show the field in which the degree
    was obtained, nor would the Ph.D.
    Lis
    Academic Board.
    There was considerable discussion on the relationship of the Academic
    Board to the University. It was agreed that the two University representatives
    (C.D. Nelson and R.J. Baker) on the Academic Board be requested to provide
    to Senate a regular written report on the activities of the Academic Board.
    It was also agreed that the Academic Board would be informed of major matters
    on which Senate had taken a decision if it was felt that these matters were
    of interest to the Academic Board.

    Senate Committee on Kinesiology
    The Senate Committee through its Chairman, K.E. Rieckhoff, presented to
    Senate its interpretation of its duties. Senate ratified the duties as they
    are set out here:
    1. (a)
    The Committee's recommendations on curriculum shall
    be submitted to Senate. Departments and/or Faculties
    need not concur.
    (b) Recommendations to Senate that specific courses of the
    Kinesiology program be offered by certain Departments
    should be made after consultation with the Departments
    concerned.
    2.
    Any budgetary recommendations required to implement
    the curriculum, facilities and/or taff recommendations
    of the Committee shall he submitted to Senate.
    3.
    Hiring of staff to handle this program is the responsibility
    of the Departments concerned. If Departments experience
    conflicts of interests as a result of specific appointments,
    they are to bring the matter before this Committee for
    resolution of such conflicts.
    4.
    This Committee has the responsibility
    of
    recommending to
    Senate the degree requirements for
    t he Kinesiology program.
    6.
    Grade Distributions, Fall 1966
    There was considerable discussion in Senate
    on
    the apparent inconsistencies
    in examination techniques and grading practices within the Faculties, and
    within Departments. It was agreed that a Senate Committee should be formed to
    examine the examination systems and grading procedures currently in use in the
    University and to make recommendations to Senate. It was agreed that the
    President should consult the Deans to establish the membership of this Committee.
    7. Summer Replacement for W. Vidaver.
    It was agreed that G. Geen should replace W. Vidaver on Senate during the
    Summer
    semester.
    8. Continuing Education
    • Senate approved a motion recommending that Simon Fraser University establish
    no formal program for extension work at this time, but would reconsider the
    matter following the receipt of a report from A.R. MacKinnon and C.L. Hamilton,
    the University's representatives on the Inter Universities Committee on Continuing
    Education.

    Research Grants
    The Senate passed a motion of congratulations to those whose names were
    contained in the President's memorandum of March 28th 1967, listing the
    Rational Research Council grants for the year.
    10.
    Date of Next Meeting
    The next meeting of Senate will be on May 1, 1967 at 1.30 PM.
