For Information -
Revised Undergraduate Admission
Targets for 2000/01
Senate received information with regard to revised undergraduate admission
targets for each basis-of-admission group for each semester in 2000/01 and
revised undergraduate admission targets to each Faculty. The revisions reflect
the allocation of 230 new undergraduate FTE's for SFU by the provincial
government. A discrepancy in the figures in Table 2 for semester 2000-3 for
Science and for the university total was pointed out. Senate was advised that
there appeared to be a 'rounding off' error in Table 2 that would be corrected but
the figures as they appeared in the memorandum from W. Wattamaniuk were
correct. It was noted that the allocation of 230 FTE's by the provincial
government had translated into 400 new admissions recommended by SCEMP
and an inquiry was made about the difference in numbers. Senate was advised
that one FTE equaled more than one student and in order to get 230 additional
FTh's SCEMP has estimated an additional 400 new students are required.

Paper S.00-59 -
For Information -
Undergraduate Curriculum Revisions -

Paper S.00-48 - Revisions to the Rules of Senate
Moved by J
.
Munro, seconded by C. Steinbach
"that Senate approve the revisions to the Rules of Senate as set
forth in S.00-48. These revisions would take effect 6 June, 2000"
Reference was made to the deletion with respect to the attendance of the editor of
The Peak at open sessions of Senate. It was pointed out that Senate Rules limit
the number of observers at open meetings and concern was expressed that
should the number of observers exceed the limit a place for The Peak should be
maintained. Senate was advised that this statement was a hold over from a time
when Senate meetings were not regarded as open but since anyone was
permitted to attend Senate there was no longer a need for this specific reference.
• If the numbers of observers were too large, priority would be given to
representatives from Simon Fraser News and The Peak since their observations
would reach a wider audience.

S.M. 5 June 2000
Page 12
Inquiry was made as to why the question period had been placed at the
beginning of the meeting rather than the end. Opinion was expressed that if it
was at the end of the meeting it could be waived if there was an extraordinary
long agenda. Senate was advised that the Senate Review Committee went
beyond just Senate related matters with regard to the question period and it was
felt to be of sufficient priority that it should be at the beginning of the meeting
because Senate was the only forum in which university wide issues could be
discussed and if left to the end of the agenda these general issues might get
crowded out.
Reference was made to page 3, the last sentence of Section V.B.2 that appeared to
be an unintentional repetition of earlier sentences in the same section. A
suggestion to delete the last sentence was accepted as an editorial amendment. It
was also noted that there were typographical errors within the document which
would be addressed by notifying the Secretary of Senate of the details.
Referring to page 3, section 5, it was noted that there are a number of work
stations quite close to the reserve collection in the Library and suggestion was
made that since Senate materials were on the Web there was no need for a paper
copy to be kept on reserve. It was pointed out that only the agenda without
supporting papers was on the Web and that the whole set of Senate papers was
available on reserve.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
