Amundsen, Cheryl
Faculty of Education
I am completing my first year at SFU after spending 10 years on faculty at McGill
University. At McGill, I was cross-appointed to the Centre for University Teaching and
Learning where I had the opportunity to work with instructors across the university and to
engage in a continuing research program in higher education. I twice served on a
committee similar to SCUTL and enjoyed the experience. I do know from that experience,
that a committee like SCUTL composed of members interested in and committed to
quality in university teaching has the potential to make real differences in areas of
importance to faculty. From my discussions with colleagues at SFU this year, I know that
some areas of concern include the evaluation of teaching, assessment of student learning,
the course development process and the use of new technologies for teaching. I would
welcome the opportunity to contribute to the work of SCUTL in these and other areas.
Atkins, Stella
School of Computing Science
Statement of Interest - Senate Policy Committee on Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries
It is essential for the University to recruit and reward exceptional students, as they will be
the leaders of tomorrow. As graduate chair in the School of Computing Science, I am
actively involved in the recruiting of new graduate students, which involves offering
scholarships... .GF's to promising non-Canadians and Canadians and NSERC top-ups to
attract the best Canadians.
I have served on the University-wide committee to allocate graduate entrance scholarships
and doctoral awards, and on the Faculty committee to allocate private and University-
wide scholarships to current graduate students.
Issues I would like to address include:
• budget/methods for recruiting top non-Canadians and top Canadians (eg NSERC PGS
winners) as graduate students
• effect of possibility of differential fees for non-Canadians
• how to encourage women to enter Sciences as grad students
• how to attract the best high school students as undergrads at SFU (budget/methods,
such as special internships at desirable places, or foreign exchanges as well as
financial awards)
• how to attract excellent mature students as undergrads to SFU

Budra, Paul
I've been on faculty at SFU for ten years now as a member of the English Department.
I'm interested on serving on the Senate Nominating Committee because this committee,
by its very nature, offers an excellent overview of the entire Senate committee structure. It
would be a good place for a novice senator like myself to learn the responsibilities and
jurisdictions of the individual committees and to understand their place in the governing
process of the university.
I'm interested in serving on the Senate Committee on Continuing Studies because of my
personal interest in life-long learning and alternate forms of teaching. As a Shakespeare
scholar, I have been-invited many times to lead seminars on Shakespeare for community
groups, such as seniors' centres and high school clubs, and to act as a resource for theatre
groups. I helped develop, and I continue to run, my department's distance-education
Shakespeare course. I have also been active in television and radio teaching. These
activities have made me aware of not only the potential constituency for continuing
studies, but the diverse ways in which that community might be served.
I'm interested in serving on the Senate Library Committee because I am concerned that
library resources be allocated in a fashion that serves the entire university community.
Chuah, Kuan
For SAB and CRUA
I am most interested in being a member of a committee where I will be able to help
students directly, one on one, and deal with their specific problems and issues. With
these aims in mind, I am convinced that I will be able to do my best for the benefit of my
fellow students as a member of the Senate Appeals Board and the Committee responsible
for Undergraduate Admissions.
As a student senator in these committees, I will uphold the ideals of fairness, patience,
consideration, and diligence in the service of others. I will work as a team player with
other committee members. In my decision making, I shall adopt a process where I weigh
all the facts presented before me and discuss the matter with other committee members
before coming to my own decision and influencing that of the committees.
Driver, Jon
SCIA statement of interest
I have served a previous term on SCIA and was the first chair of its subcommittee ISEC.
SCIA is an important Senate committee because it reviews the university's official role in
international activities, some of which may be contentious when political issues or human
rights are involved. I believe that these difficult cases should be reviewed on an individual
basis; I do not believe SFU should back away from international activity in every situation
where foreign governments fail to conform to certain standards.

If elected to SCIA I would also be willing to serve on ISEC. The university benefits from
student exchanges, as do individual students.

Dean of Student and Education Support Services, Langara College
I have a genuine interest in the committees on which I have been serving and would like
to continue on them.
I believe that longerservice and experience on these committees provides continuity and
the opportunity to understand the issues SFU faces. I also hope that as a result of the
experience, I am in a better position to support Senate in its decision making.
Frisken, Barbara
I joined SFU in
1992
after completing a PhD at UBC
(1989)
and a postdoctoral fellowship
at University of California, Santa Barbara
(1989-1992). I
was promoted to Associate
Professor and tenured in
1998. My
research program involves studies of phospholipid
vesicles, focussing both on methods of production and on mechanical properties of the
vesicles produced. I am currently supervising three graduate students and one
• undergraduate student in my lab. One of my students is part of the Eastern Indonesia
University Development Program. I have served on various Departmental Committees
and on the Ad Hoc Committee to Review Student Conduct Policies.
I have consented to be nominated for ISEC for several reasons. I have had the opportunity
of working with a large number of international students as fellow student, colleague, and
supervisor during my career in physics and I believe international programs are a great
opportunity for both the students and their colleagues. My main administrative role in the
Department of Physics has been as Undergraduate Advisor, both to majors and non-
majors. I enjoy working with students and have advised several students on their
participation in international programs. I would like to get involved in this committee
because I support these activities, but also because I have some concerns about the
quality of the institutions which our students have to chose from and would like to see
some improvement in this area.
During my career at SFU I have taught a number of courses and have participated in
various teaching development programs such as the Instructional Skills Workshop. I
agreed to be nominated for SCUTL because I am interested in teaching and learning issues
and environments.
Gillies, Mary Ann
I am seeking reelection to the Senate Library Committee after completing a
2
year term.
• My experience working on library issues - on SLC, as the University member on the recent
External Review of the library, and during my 5 years as English department library
representative - provides me with a broad knowledge of the issues and concerns facing the

library. They have also permitted me to act effectively as liaison between the university
community and the library. As the library continues to implement the reforms and
initiatives suggested by the Review, by the SLC, and by its own internal review process I
would like remain involved in the process. I want to continue to act as a strong voice for
faculty and students on SLC and a strong advocate for the central importance of the library
in our teaching and research activities at SFU.
Kirczenow, George
Statement of interest in serving on SCAR.
I am interested in serving on SCAR because I believe that its work has a large impact on
how well Senate as a whole and the other committees of Senate function. Having served
on Senate for two years now, I think that I know enough about the workings of Senate to
be effective as a member of SCAR, while at the same time still being able bring a relatively
fresh critical perspective to its deliberations.
Mathewes, Rolf
(SCAR and SAB)
After 29 years on campus, both as student and faculty member, I have witnessed much
change. Increasing institutional size and complexity requires that rules and procedures be
critically reviewed on an ongoing basis, including the operations of Senate. As a prior and
current member of SCAR, I feel that this committee has worked very well, and I would like
to continue contributing to its roles of evaluating agenda items and updating procedures of
Senate operation.
With respect to Senate Appeals Board, I see myself as a fair-minded individual who
always wants to hear both sides of a disagreement before making up my mind. Although
it is not a pleasant task to make decisions with long-term consequences for students, it is a
job I do not mind (much to my own surprise). I have prior and current experience on SAB,
and am willing to serve again.
McFetridge, Paul
I have agreed to stand for nomination for the Senate Committee on International Activities
and the International Student Exchange Committee. I have a long standing interest in
international activities: I have worked on joint projects with researchers in Brazil and in
Thailand, and have worked at a university lab in Thailand on 2 occasions. I am one of the
founding members of a research and development consortium that includes 6-8 European
countries. This experience has provided perspective on some of the issues that arise in
international activities and has given me reasons to value international collaboration. I
was one of the original members of ISEC and sat on that committee for 2 years and so am
very familiar with the procedures and issues of the committee.

Statement of Interest - Senate Committee on Disciplinary Appeals
Being a graduate student in the School of Criminology here at SFU and, having completed
the course work component of my Masters degree, I am now in the process of collecting
data and conducting research for my thesis. The thesis, in part, focuses on the regulation
and discipline of professions and has led me to investigate the procedural nature of
disciplinary actions that may be faced by professionals. This interest stemmed in part from
the work I conducted for my honours thesis, in which I looked at the specific legal,
regulatory, and public interest issues surrounding what I termed multiple proceedings; that
is, various proceedings against an individual (i.e. civil, criminal, professional) for what
may be one set of events. These interests have also led to my involvement in the Senate
Committee on Disciplinary Appeals. My participation on this committee for the past year
has permitted me to see in practice what I often read about in my research. This praxis is
exceedingly valuable and has allowed me to view first-hand the procedural safeguards
and commitment to fairness which ensure that the SFU disciplinary system operates in a
manner respectful of all concerned. An additional year on this committee would allow
me to enhance my skills in what has so far been an interesting and educational
experience, thereby permitting me to contribute, in a modest way, to a community which
has provided me with exceptional opportunities.

The Senate is a vital part of the university which has powers defined by the Education Act.
With its diverse membership and representation, Senate provides a forum for debate about
matters of importance to the University. If elected Vice-Chair my goal would be to help
ensure that meetings are conducted in a manner that encourages debate but maintains a
sense of decorum which leads to effective decision-making. The best discussions in Senate
should reflect transcendent values of the University community more than special
interests.
Trained as a lawyer and psychologist, my area of research and teaching is legal
psychology. Legal psychologists explore the relationship that the law has on people and
that which people have on the law. My interests are in the areas of jury research,

mentally ill offenders, and professional ethics. I have published five books, and over 80
articles and chapters in these areas.

Statement for SPCSAB
I am a Laboratory Instructor in the Chemistry Department and teach both of our first-year
laboratory courses, Chem 121 and Chem 126, courses which attract a large number of
Entrance Scholarship students. I maintain contact with many High School teachers and I
have been active in recruiting students. I enjoy teaching them and following their progress
through their undergraduate years.
I was a member of Senate for five years and have served on the Senate Policy Committee
on Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries for several terms. I believe I have a good
knowledge of the SFU administrative structure and can make a positive contribution to the
committee's work. I wish to serve on this committee another term.
Palmer, Leigh
Statement for SUAAC
I believe that the quality of a university education, and for that matter the quality of a
university, is strongly correlated with its collegiality. If one has excellent colleagues in a
university then it is, most likely, an excellent university. If a student's colleagues are
excellent then the student's learning will benefit greatly from collegial interaction. If we
are to provide the best education for our students then we must make some considerable
effort to provide them with excellent colleagues. It is my feeling that the undergraduate
scholarship program, and most particularly the resources devoted to the entrance
scholarship program, should be used as effectively as possible to attract a large proportion
of the best of our BC high school graduates. For that reason I have devoted a large portion
of my professional life at Simon Fraser to attracting exceptional high school students,
partly through my work on the various scholarship committees the university has had over
the last thirty-four years. I would like to continue to serve on SUAAC, the body which
chooses the particular high school graduates we wish to recruit.

As a professor with 16 years of service to SFU, including service on many committees at
all levels, I feel that I have the experience and context to serve effectively on SCAP, SCUB,
and SCODA. In particular, I believe that my service on Senate, the University Tenure
Committee, a variety of Senate committees, and as Director of Graduate Studies in the
School of Computing Science, has given me a broad view of the university and its
workings. I would like to bring this experience to SCAP. In my current capacity as
Associate Director of Computing Science, I have responsibility for budgets, so I can also
bring experience to SCUB. My experience relevant to SCODA includes my current
position as chair of the Senate Committee to Revise Student Conduct Policies. I have also
served on the University Board on Student Discipline and as chair of the departmental

I am keenly interested in the future of our university and in the open and democratic
development of policies that will allow us to excel in spite of the current financially
difficult circumstances.

the Faculties and Departments, committees such as SCAP and SCUB have global
responsibilities to the institution as a whole, always bearing in mind the reality of
budgetary constraints. The SCUB/SCAP responsibilities might be summarized as follows:
?
• to foster academic developments throughout the campus, without compromising
academic quality;

to verify and approve criteria and priorities for the development of new academic
programs in the graduate, undergraduate and continuing education areas;
• to assess the intellectual quality and value, in academic terms, of both "old" and "new"
programs of instruction;
to advise (in the case of SCUB) on matters relating to the appropriate allocation of
resources to both academic and non-academic facilities and services, to assist the
University to fulfil its mission in a changing world.
In the midst of our drive for excellence, CRUA helps to put a human face to our
endeavours, in providing a means for the less fortunate to receive careful consideration,
and not be ignored.
Reist, Shauna
Upon being nominated for a student position on the Senate Committee on Disciplinary
Appeals, I have been asked to email a short statement of interest. In short, my interest in
acting as a student senate representative is due to my desire to learn more about
administrative issues. I am particularly interested in academic policies on educational
conduct and issues of harassment. Serving on the senate committee would be a good way
to foster these interests.
Sersun, Leanne
I, Leanne Sersun have a BComm (Honours) from the University of Manitoba. Currently, I
am completing the requirements for an MBA in Human Resource Management at Simon
Fraser University. For the past two semesters I have been employed as a teacher's
assistant for the Faculty of Business Administration. My diplomatic and interviewing skills
would be a great asset to the SAB.
Singh, Laila
I would like to express my interest in the position of the regular Graduate Student
Representative on the Senate Library Committee.
I feel that the library is a very important resource to graduate students in all departments
and faculties at SFU. In order for SFU to have graduate programs that are competitive
with older more established institutions we need to ensure that we have excellent library
holdings and services.
Smith, Michael
After serving 3 years as Chair of the Department of Biological Sciences during difficult
economic times, I have gained substantial experience in managing limited funds to sustain
an excellent program. To maintain and enhance the international standing of Simon
Fraser University, academic planning and budget development must be keyed to the

primary mission of this University, education and the development of new knowledge.

Steele, Stephen
I would like to stand for the Senate Graduate Awards Adjudication Committee. My
statement follows:
I am a member of the French GSC. I offer 800-level courses on a regular basis. My record
of graduate supervision includes students in French and Special Arrangements.
Sugarman, Jeff
(B.A.,
Waterloo; M.A, Ph.D., SFU). Prior to my recent appointment as Assistant Professor
in the Faculty of Education, I held the position of learning specialist in the SFU
Counselling Service: During my tenure in the Counselling Service, I became aware of the
many kinds of challenges and issues students face in making the transition from secondary
school and college to university. As a faculty member, I also am familiar with the
difficulties one encounters in attempting to be both an advocate for students and a
guardian of academic standards. Beyond these qualifications, I can be counted on to
follow through on my commitments and to be a judicious presence at CRUA.
To, Shek Yan

SCIA, Calendar Committee and DQAC.

SCAP/SCUB
I believe both committees are important to SFU and senate. The decisions made by both
committees have the great effects to the whole University community in both short and
long terms. I will ensure that my active involvement will benefit to all members of the
university and will keep SFU with the sustainable growth and success to the future.
SCAR
In my service in Senate, I am interested in the duties that SCAR deals with. I feel that the
agendas approved by SCAR are important to maintain and encourage the high-level and
positive debates and order in Senate meetings. I want to emphasis this point because I had
a chance to visit the UBC Senate meeting in April and the my conclusion to UBC senate
was one word: boring. There was no debate like what we have in every meeting!
DQAC
I am seeking an appointment for second year on DQAC. I support this admission policy
becasue it provides flexibility to admit qualified students. I will maintain the highest
standard in scoring the applications and provide my active involvement to improve the
admission policy. I would like to have the opportunity to continue to serve on this
committee.
Yau, David
I am writing in expressing my interest in running for the vacant undergraduate position on
Senate Library Committee (SLC) and Senate Appeal Board (SAB).

As a third year student major in Business Administration and Computer Science, I have
participated in numerous student activities. Currently, I am the Business Forum
Representative and Student Liaison in Business Administration Student Society. Through
these activities, I have many opportunities to listen to students' opinion. I am ready to join
the committees and serve the university community.
Thanks for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
