REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
a) ?
The
Chairman was pleased
to report that the annual Awards
Ceremony
had become so
successful and well. received
in the community that it
had to be
relocated to the
SFU Theatre this year.
He was also pleased to note that
Senator R.
Mathewes
?
was to
?
receive
?
one
?
of the
?
faculty
?
teaching ?
awards
?
and
extended
congratulations
on behalf of Senate.
b)
Senate was informed that
the Board of Governors approved installation
of a new
telephone system
which not
only is needed to replace obsolete equipment
but also is
required as the
University
becomes more computerized.
?
The Chairman
explained
that
?
it is
?
being
debt funded; the University will repay the loan over an
amortized
period from the
savings in
the rental fees which are currently incurred.
c)
The Chairman reported that Alumni activities have been tremendous in
terms of growth and general involvement. He was pleased to report that the
Alumni Association, in a successful annual fundraising campaign, exceeded their
target of $100,000 and pointed out that the Association had grown from a handful
of interested people to a much larger, dedicated, hardworking group of individuals.
He also noted that additional chapters and subgroups have been formed within the
the general Association.
d)
The Chairman reported that the major fundraising campaign in which
the University is currently involved, is going well. The general fundraising with
regard to bursaries, scholarships, and donations has improved significantly with
last month's total contributions amounting to $200,000.
e)
Burnaby Council has not yet approved the concept of the SFU Village.
The Chairman advised no action will be taken with regard to engineering studies
and other processes unless a favourable response is received from Burnaby.
f)
A significant enrolment increase has created major resource problems
and pressures for the University and it is difficult to judge where this is leading.

. The Vice-President Academic has been instructed to look at this issue and to
provide suggestions on how to handle, internally and externally, changes and
growth, over the next five years, and also to provide statistics and projections
which might help to convince the Government that additional funding, particuarly
in the area of increased faculty and space, will be needed if the University is
expected to grow. The Vice-President Academic has also been requested to
provide an interim report suggesting options on how to cope with this immediate
increase in enrolment.
g) Concern was raised about an article in the Vancouver Sun which
referred to a report on the perceptions of senior ministry officials, relating to
universities. Critical opinions of the universities and the role of faculty members
were highlighted. ?
The Chairman felt that the article did not reflect the entire
?
thrust of the report itself and that the press had extracted some of the more
colorful comments. ?
However, he did feel the report was useful in that it brought to
?
the attention of the universities an important group of people which had
apparently been neglected. As a result, the Chairman indicated that the Vice-
President has been requested to immediately commence a program inviting senior
civil servants to campus to meet and observe faculty who are working in areas of
direct interest to them.
