Business Arising from the Minutes
a)
In reply to an inquiry of the follow-up status of the results of the ESL questionnaire
as requested at the last meeting, R. Heath advised that a report from the Senate Undergraduate
Admissions Board was expected to be forwarded to Senate for discussion at a meeting of Senate
in early Fall.
b)
In response to concerns expressed about the vacancies of student members on Senate.
R. Heath Indicated that intent was to Issue a second call for nominations In time to have
representatives in place for early Fall.

a)
Senate was informed that the nominees for university scholarships such as the Simon
Fraser and Presidents Entrance Scholarships and the Shrum Scholarship had been contacted
personally for the first time in SFUs history and he expressed opinion that this personal touch
appeared to be valued by the students. R. Saunders added that only one of the nominees had
declined.
b)
The Chairman reported that there was very little further news In terms of budget
Information. Announcement for the allocation of some funds had been made and he was
pleased to report that on the basic distribution, SPU had been fairly and reasonably treated.
However, the actual budget is not yet known and the administration is still unable to commence
salary and benefit discussions for employee groups.
c)
Following review of promotion, tenure and renewal files, the Chairman expressed how
impressed he was with the high quality of so many faculty colleagues at
SPU.
d)
Following attendance at the Annual Meeting of the SFU Alumni organization, the
Chairman wished to draw Senates attention to the tremendous job the Alumni has done In
fund-raising and, on behalf of the University, extended thanks to Greg Basham for the superb
job he had done as President and noted that he has agreed to serve in this position for another
term.
e)
The Chairman presented a brief report on the Bridge to the Future campaign and noted
that J
. Blaney and his staff were doing a superb job in this respect. He also reported that with

Senate received information that the Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies acting
under delegated authority at its meeting of May 27, 1986 approved a change in prerequisite for
BUEC 397.
A-report-fromthe-Dean-cf-Graduate-Studies-was-received-by--Senate for-1nformation----
Rieckh&f noted that the report was In response to criticisms he had made at the time the
annual report of the Senate Graduate Studies Committee was presented to Senate and he wished
to express his gratitude for the useful and interesting information provided in the report.
There was no other business.

Senate was advised that unless business of a sufficiently pressing nature arises, the July
and August meetings of Senate would not take place and therefore the next regular meeting of
