1.
APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA
The agenda was approved as distributed.
2. APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES
The Minutes of the Open Session of October 1, 1984 were approved as distributed.
3.
BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
In reply to an inquiry concerning the President's remarks and PACUP recommendations,
the Chairman indicated that intent was to bring to Senate through the full committee
process a mission statement in which many of the recommendations would appear but
which would nevertheless be a statement from the President.
4.
REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
i)
Paper 5.84-52 - Annual Report
Senate received, for information, the Financial Statement for the fiscal year ending
March 31, 1984. ?
E. Scott, Vice-President Finance, was not called on to provide any
further information or clarification.
ii) Update on President's Advisory Committee on University Priorities
Referring to the report of the President's Advisory Committee on University
Priorities and the set of presidential recommendations which had been publicly
announced to the University community, the Chairman indicated that a high level of
consultation, discussion and debate was taking place at all levels and in all areas
of the University.
G. Ivany advised that a number of the recommendations in the form of motions were on
the agenda for the next meeting of the Senate Camdttee on Academic Planning which
was scheduled for November 7th.
?
However, intent was to hold a general discussion of
process and procedure and table all motions to a special meeting of SCAP on November
14th which would allow for input from two general Faculty meetings (Arts and
Interdisciplinary Studies) as well as from interested parties wishing to speak to
SCAP.
?
It is hoped that the motions can be acted upon at that time and proceed to the
December 3rd meeting of Senate.
It was stressed that the matters coming to SCAP refer to the reorganization
recommendations in the President's statement and do not deal with budget cuts or
discontinuation of programs.
The Chairman reported that the Senate Committee on University Budget
is
actively
meeting and is in the process of forwarding recommendations to the President and
Senate was reminded that the Chairman of SCUB was well disposed to receive input from
interested Senators.

the Centre for the Arts. He briefly reviewed the tradition of Simon Fraser
University to allow innovative change and new disciplines to develop and pointed out
the relevance and quality of the program itself. He strongly opposed the proposed
budget cut and pointed out some of the consequences which would result. Continued
support and commitment to maintaining a program of academic excellence was requested
from Senate.
iv)

Senate was informed that the following individuals have been nominated by the
President to the Academic Council of the Open University Consortium: Professor Curt
