4. REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
a) Senate was informed that although the amount of financial aid
per individual had remained the same as last year, the overall
amount of financial aid available to students in general had
increased substantially this year.
b)
The Chairman expressed the concerns the University had at the
present time about the budget situation and the difficulty of cutting
back
2.7
million dollars in the middle of a fiscal year but indicated
that the University would be doing well if able to retain its 1982-83
budget in 1983-84.
c)
Thanks and appreciation were expressed by the Chairman to L. Hale
for his comments and contributions to the memorial service for
S. Hinchcliffe who was a student at Simon Fraser University and a
former member of Senate.
d) Reporting briefly on his recent visit to Japan, the Chairman
informed Senate that the purpose of the trip had been two-fold.
Firstly, to explore the possibility of developing a faculty and
student exchange program and, secondly, to gain a better under-
standing of the role played by universities in the area of high
technological developments, particularly with regard to Engineering
and Applied Sciences. The visit had proved to be very successful
and the matter of an exchange program would be given consideration
in the forthcoming months.
