    BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
In reply to an inquiry from K. Rieckhoff as to the status of the
motion .to refer at the last meeting of Senate regarding the establishment
of an Ad Hoc Committee to consider the matter of student teaching assess-
ments, H. M. Evans indicated that a recommendation would be brought to
    Senate at its October meeting.
    4.
    REPORT OF THE CHAIRMAN
    a)
K.G. Pedersen was attending the 90th birthday celebration for Burnaby
and would return to chair Senate following the ceremony.
    b)
It was noted that the special ceremony which had preceded Senate to
officially name Klaus Rieckhoff Hall was accomplished in a very warm and
    successful manner.
    c)
Senate was informed that there would be an awards ceremony held in
    January next year at which
.a number of awards and recognitions would be
presented to students and faculty. This would include fellowships and
awards which various faculty have won, the Terry Fox Award, the C. D.
Nelson Memorial Award and an expected award of excellence in teaching.
With regard to student awards, Senate will be presented at its October
meeting with a proposal for the establishment of an honor roll.
    d)
    L. Hale brought to Senate's attention the tragic death of
    ,
    a former
Senator and colleague, Stephen Hinchcliffe. His loss was a blow to the
university community as a whole and L. Hale inquired if a memorial for
him was being planned. The Chair thanked L. Hale for bringing this matter
forward and indicated that the Senate Committee on Agenda and Rules would
    take this under advisement.
    e)
Paper S.82-80 - Annual Report ,- For Information
As required by the University Act, the Annual Report of the University
is distributed for information. Senators having any questions on the report
were asked to present them in writing and, if necessary, answers would be
provided at a later meeting of Senate.
Concern was expressed that no one from the Department of Finance
was present at the meeting to answer questions directly. The Chair indicated
that the Director had been invited to be present but was unable to attend.
However, Senators were assured that he would be quite willing to participate
in written and verbal discussion of the report.
    f)
At the request ol the Chair, H.M. Fvan8 reported on erirolrnflt tlqureu
which were taken at the end of the first day to change courses. i.e. WcIuni(ky,

    SENATE LIBRARY COMMITTEE
    a) Paper S.82-88 - Annual Report - 1981/82 - For Information
A lengthy discussion took place in connection with the operation
of the Library and the material contained in the report. In reply to
a number of questions concerning the loss rate, T. Dobb pointed out that
with the installation of an electronic security system it is expected
that the loss rate will be reduced by 82%-85%. Discussion then turned
to the question of how the Library decided which periodicals should be
kept and which should be cut and an inquiry was made as to the results
of an attempt to consult with Departments on this question. T. Dobb
replied that there had been a poor response from faculty and this
particular project had not been successful. He pointed out that the
Library was no longer operating under the quid pro quo system and that
the review of periodicals was an ongoing process in the Library. T. Dobb
also reported that the amalgamation (physically not administratively) of
the Humanities and Social Sciences Divisions to the 5th Floor of the Library
had led to reduced costs and improved service. Concern was expressed that
the report was too brief and a suggestion was made that future reports are
    made in more detail.
