    Student Senator J. A. Hanson has tendered his resignation from
    Senate, effective September 1, 1981, due to his transfer to UBC as
    the recipient of a B.C. Law Foundation Scholarship. Election processes
    will be put in flow to seek a replacement.

    APPROVAL OF AGENDA
    It was moved by L. Hale, seconded by J. Crawley, and carried
    that the agenda be approved as circulated.
    2.
    APPROVAL OF MINUTES
    The minutes of the Open Session of July 13, 1981 were approved as
    distributed.
    3.
    BUSINESS ARISING FROM THE MINUTES
    At the request of the Chairman, T. Calvert reported briefly on
    his recent visit to a number of Japanese universities and a major
    industrial organization. It is the intention to prepare a detailed
    report,.. focussing on Engineering Science developments, for distribution
    to interested faculty.
    4.
    REPORT OF CHAIRMAN
    i)
    Paper s.81-116 - Annual Report
    Discussion on the Financial Statements as at March 31, 1981 was
    deferred to the next meeting of Senate when it is hoped that the
    Executive Director of Finance will be available to respond to questions.
    ii)
    Newly elected Senator N. Reilly was welcomed by the Chairman,
    and M. Roberts was greeted following a year's absence on research leave.
    iii)
    Senate was informed that the visit of a delegation from The

    People's Republic of China has been delayed until the end of this month.
    iv) The Secretary provided data in connection with preliminary
    estimates of enrolments, which indicate an undergraduate head count of
    10,150 compared to 9,750 a year ago - something in excess of 4%, or an
    FTE increase of 3%. The graduate student enrolments to date suggest a
    possible 3% increase.
    Responding to a question, J. Munro stated that the Committee on
    Enrolment Limitation has circulated a draft report to obtain input from
    the University community and will be preparing recommendations for
    comment within the next few weeks prior to submitting its final report
    to Senate.
    General discussion and questions ensued in connection with graduate
    stipends, distribution of scholarships, responded to by J. Munro and H.
    Weinberg.

    Data Processing - Change of Description, Change of Pre-
    requisites
    Acting under its delegated authority at its meeting of July 28,
    1981, SCUS reported that it had approved change of description and
    change of prerequisite for CMPT 360-3 - Computation for Statistical
    Data Processing.
    P. Cripps suggested that -the information reports of the Senate
    Committee on Undergraduate Studies (through Papers S.81-120, 81-121,
    81-122, 81-123) would be more useful if submitted in a summary, rather
    than synopsis, form. His position was supported by the student caucus.
    The Secretary provided a brief history of the terms of reference of
    SCUS and the decision of Senate to delegate certain of its powers to
    that Committee, with intent that SCUS exercise power of decision and
    that a number of relatively routine items that had occupied the time

    of Senate in debate and decision be removed to the SCUS level and that
    report to Senate be at its next meeting in a brief summary form. J.
    Munro expected that if more information is required than that now
    provided any interested Senator would request it from the Secretary.
    Some members indicated their desire for more routine provision of
    information. The Chairman noted the concerns expressed.
    iii) Senate Library Committee
    a) Paper 5.81-124 - Annual Report - 1981/82
    T. Dobb responded to a number of questions in connection with the
    operation of the Library. N. Reilly expressed concern regarding serial
    cut-backs which he said had caused considerable distress in some depart-
    ments. He suggested that the closest possible cooperation is necessary
    between the Library and the affected departments.
