Paper S.74-85 - Report on Committee Activities to Summer 1974
The Chairman noted that the paper had been presented to Senate
for information. J. Wheatley criticized the bulk of the document and
    T. Sterling suggested that the first five pages met the reporting
requirements imposed by Senate. J. DAuria enquired about the Wells
Report on grading and grading practices, and suggested that the
Committee should be asked to report on that matter by the October
meeting of Senate. I. Mugridge stated that the Wells Report is
currently under Committee consideration and it would likely take the
balance of the year to garner department reaction to proposals contained
    in the Report.
Moved by J. D'Auria, seconded by A. Dawson,
    S ?
"That the Senate Committee on Undergraduate
Studies be directed to produce its recommenda-
tions on grading and grading practices to

for offering only until development and approval
of the programs in Political Science and in
    Sociology/Anthropology
    during
    1974/75.
Questions were raised regarding the number of Special Topics courses,
the PSA. prefix, vector and credit hour designation and possibility of
equivalent courses in the proposed new programs for the Departments of
Political Science and Sociology/Anthropology. I.Whitaker, Chairman of the
Department of Sociology/Anthropology, was invited to respond and he explained
that the courses were specifically designed for interim utilization when new
faculty are due on campus and the proposed programs are not yet finalized for
presentation for Senate ratification. He commented that Senate had already
made its view public by splitting the Department and implied this as recog-
nition that the present curriculum is inadequate and archaic. He said that
these courses were required to move away from stagnation by utilizing the
    expertise of new faculty.
In response to a question from J. Ellis, the Chairman indicated that these
PSA. courses would be discontinued with the advent of the new programs. In
answer to comment from J. Seager, it was stated that a student could take each
of the courses but not more than once, and that provision would be made in the
    S ?
new programs that students who had taken specific content under one of them?
could not take the same content again for further credit.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
    MOTION CARRIED
Moved by S. Smith, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,
"That the normal two semester time lag
requirement be waived in order that PSA.
    480-5, 481-5, 482-5, and 483-5 may be

In reply to a question posed by A. Dawson, J. Barlow stated
that the expression "over time" should be interpreted to mean that
the Department intended to complete the changes specified as quickly
as possible without affecting students currently enrolled in the
    courses labelled for discontinuance.
