S.M. 3/6/74
S. Smith considered that opportunity should be given to the newly
elected student Senator, who is one of the candidates in the election
to the Academic Planning Committee, to become familiar with the opera-
tion of Senate and the responsibilities of its various related Committees,
and for Senators to have opportunity to know more of her.
Question was called on the motion to postpone, and a vote taken.
MOTION TO POSTPONE CARRIED
2. Senate Committee on Undergraduate Studies
1. Paper S.74-75 - Department of Biological Sciences - New Course
Proposals, Marine Science
Moved by J. Barlow, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,
"That Senate approve, as set forth in S.74-75,
the new course proposals for:
MASC 411-6 - Comparative Embryology of Marine
Invertebrates
MASC 412-6 - Biology of Fishes
MASC 435-6 - Introduction to Biological?
Oceanography."
VJ. Barlow pointed out that, due to an omission, the prerequisite
statement for MASC 435-6 was incomplete, and it should read:
"Biology 204-3, Biology 306-3 or Biology 326-3. The normal
Chemistry and Physics requirements for the BioScience program
or their equivalents, must precede."
The Chairman stated that the prerequisite statement would be subsumed
in the motion.
D. DeVoretz asked for the rationale for the additional prerequisites
and J. Barlow responded that, as some Biology. stUdents tend to leave the
Physics requirements until the end of their programs, the prerequisite
would ensure the necessary preparation for enrolment in this course.
Question was called, and a vote taken.
MOTION CARRIED
Moved by J. Barlow, seconded by K. Rieckhoff,.
"That Senate waive the normal two semester time
lag requirement in order that these courses may

Referring to the calendar statement with respect to the Ph.D.
qualifying examination, K. Rieckhoff enquired if formal submission
