    The Chairman called upon the Secretary of Senate to announce the
    results of recent elections conducted by the Faculty of Education to
    replace R.J.C. Harper and T. J. Mallinson who, as a result of the re-
    organization, are no longer members of the Faculty of Education. H.
    Evans reported that A. J. Dawson had been declared elected by acclama-
    tion to replace R.J.C. Harper for balance term of office to May 31,
    1973, and that N. Robinson had been duclared elected by acclamation
    to replace T. J. Mallinson for balance term of offire to May 31, 1974.
    Moved by M. Campbell, seoded by R. Bradley,
    "That A. J. Dawson and N. Robinson be seated
    on Senate."
    Question was called, and a vote taken.

    The agenda was approved as distributed.
    2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
    The minutes of the Open Session of March 6, 1972 were approved as
    circulated.

    1. Paper S.72-44 - Terms of Reference of the Senate Committee on
    Scholarships, Awards and Bursaries
    Moved by K. Rieckhoff, seconded by J. Wheatley,
    "That the terms of reference for the Senate
    Committee on Scholarships, Awards and
    Bursaries, attached as Appendix B to Paper
    S.72-44, be adopted."
    An amendment proposed by C. Basham that the Chairman of the
    Committee be a full time faculty member or a student failed for lack
    of a seconder.
    Question was called, and a vote taken.

    "That the Senate Committee on Scholarships,
    Awards and Bursaries he charged to report
    to the June meeting of Senate on the pro-
    cedures and criteria developed to implement
    charges 1, 2 and 3 and actions taken under
    charges 1, 2 and 3 of Appendix B of Paper
    S.72-44."
    The Chairman of Senate stated that it would be possible to
    prepare a preliminary report for submission to the June meeting
    of Senate.

    "That the principle of Course Challenge be
    continued with registrations permitted for

    "That for registrations in Course Challenge
    for the Summer Semester 72-2 current regula-
    tions be applied."

    "That the Senate Undergraduate Admissions
    Board review procedures, with Departments
    given opportunity to provide through their
    Faculties any comments and recommendations
    designed to improve poccdures, and with
    report back to Senate for the July 1972
    meeting if possible, with such recommenda-
    tions as are deemed desirable."

    Moved by A. Lachlan, seconded by D. Baird,
    "That Senate give the present Library Loan
    Policy permanent status on May 1, 1972."

    Paper S.72-47 - Nominations and Election of One Senator to the
    Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board (SUkB)
    Moved by S. O'Connell, seconded by D. Baird,
    "That the individual nominated to the Senate
    Undergraduate Admissions Board (SUAB) be
    declared elected by acclamation."
    Question was called, and a vote taken.
    MOTION CARRIED
    K. E. Rieckhoff was declared elected to replace R.J.C. Harper
    on the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board (SUAB) from date of
    election to September 30, 1972.

    Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board
    1.
    Paper S.72-48 - Composition of the Senate Undergraduate
    Admissions Board
    Moved by B. Wilson, seconded by K. Riecklioff,
    "That the Chairman of the Senate Undergraduate
    Admissions Board shall be the Academic Vice-
    President or a designate of his choice."
    Question was called, and a --

    Paper S.72-49 - Revision of Admission Policies - Change in
    B.C. Secondary School Curriculum
    Moved by B. Wilson, seconded by G. Basham,
    "That graduands of either Selected Studies
    or Combined Studies programs be considered
    eligible for admission to Simon Fraser
    University as long as Math 11 and two 12-
    level academic courses are included in addition
    . ?
    to the four courses required as General Educa-
    tion constants by the Department of Education."
    Amendment was moved by A. Lachlan, seconded by R. Bradley,
    'That 'Math 11 and' be deleted."
    A. Lachlan, supported by R. Bradley and J. Wheatley, spoke on
    flexibility of requirements to enable students with ineptitudes in
    one subject area to achieve their goals in areas of their intellec-
    tual ability. K. Rieckhoff spoke against the amendment, as did
    J. Barlow and G Basham, who were all opposed to deletion of such
    a prerequisite, particularly in the sciences.
    Question was cl1ed on the amendment, and a vote taken.
    AMENDMENT FAILED
    8 in favor
    11 opposed
    K. Rieckhcff then proposed an amendment to require at least
    three 12-level academic courses instead of the specified two, but
    the aiendment failed for lack of a seconder.

    Question was called on the main motion, and a vote taken.
    MOTION CARRIED
    Moved by B. Wilson, seconded by J. Wheatley,
    "That, with the discontinuance of Grade 12
    examinations, the grades awarded by the
    secondary schools be used initially as a
    basis for admission, but that Simon Fraser
    University work with the other provincial
    universities to develop satisfactory
    provincial admission standards."
    W. Reid commented that the Department of Education would continue
    to use Grade 12 examinations for scholarship purposes, and in all
    likelihood examine more subjects than previously. He added that the
    results of examinations written for scholarship purposes would be
    available for university purposes. He said that the Department of
    Education is most anxious that there be a satisfactory general stan-
    dard of admission to the provincial universities.

    Dr. Strand drew the attention of Senate to the very fine papers
    developed by Dr. Belton and Dr. Meakin on the topics, and congratulated
    them on the work.
    3.
    Paper S.72-50 - Proposal for Transfer Credit and Bachelor of
    Science Degrees for Students who Successfully Complete First
    Year Medical Science Professional Training.
    Moved by B. Wilson, seconded by W. Reid,
    "That Senate approve the following policy:
    1.
    Courses taken in an accredited professional program
    in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine may be
    considered for transfer credit at Simon Fraser
    University provided that they do not duplicate courses
    already taken at S.F.U.
    2.
    Students who have completed at least 90 semester-hours
    credit in a science degree program at S.F.U. are
    eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from
    S.F.U. after successful completion of the first year

    of a professional program in medicine, dentistry or
    veterinary medicine, provided that the courses taken
    in such a program are acceptable for transfer credit
    in a majors or honors B.Sc. degree program at S.F.U.,
    and constitute sufficient credit to bring the student's
    total to 120 semester hours credit.
    3. ?
    These regulations will apply to all students who have
    already left S.F.U. Students who are accepted into
    professional medical studies must normally apply for
    transfer credit within one year of the commencement
    of their studies."
    Question was called, and a vote taken.

    It was noted that under the intent of these regulations the
    normal regulations requiring a minimum of 60 semester hours credit
    to be taken at this institution for a degree and with no-

    more than
    30 hours transfer credit after the initial registration here shall
    apply.
