    The Chairman said that the special meeting had been called on
    petition by six members of Senate, as provided for in the Rules of Procedure
    of Senate. The members calling the meeting were K.R. Burstein, M.A. Lebowitz,
    J.W. Matthews, D.H. Sullivan, S. Wong, and S. Yandle. The rules provided
    for discussion only of the items on the agenda.

    ELECTION OF K. OKUDA AS JOINT FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE ON SENATE - S-103
    Moved by D.H. Sullivan, seconded by J.W. Matthews
    "that K. Okuda be seated on Senate"
    MOTION CARRIED
    Moved by J.L. Dampier, seconded by S. Yandle
    "that the ballot papers be destroyed"
    MOTION CARRIED
    K. Okuda then took his seat on Senate.
    2. REPORT OF THE CAUT COMMITTEE
    The first part of the agenda item was to consider in detail the
    CAUT Report.
    Moved by M.A. Lebowitz,seconded by S. Wong
    "that Senate go into Committee of the Whole for an
    open discussion of the CAUT Report"
    MOTION CARRIED
    10 in favour
    9 opposed
    At 7.10 the meeting moved into Committee of the Whole,
    J.W. Matthews taking the chair as the Dean who had been longest at the
    University and on the invitation of the President; there being no
    procedure or precedent to follow in Senate's own rules, reference was
    made to Robert's Rules of Order.
    At 8.30 it was moved by R.J. Baker, seconded by J. Walkley
    "that the Committee rise"
    MOTION CARRIED
    Senate returned to regular session and the President resumed the
    chair.

    "that the points raised in the CAUT Report be considered
    by appropriate existing or special committees, for report
    to Senate and discussion at a regular or special meeting
    in April or May"
    MOTION CARRIED

    Moved by J.L. Dampier, seconded by W. Vidaver
    "that a three-man group comprising R.J. Baker,
    J.W. Matthews and K. Okuda bring to the March 4
    meeting of Senate its proposals for the allocation
    of the various points in the CAUT report to
    appropriate existing committees or special committees
    for consideration and report. Where special
    committees are being recommended proposals for
    their structure and terms of reference should be
    included"

    MOTION CARRIED
    Moved by N.A. Lebowitz, seconded by R.N. Maud
    "that the Board of Governors be invited to comment
    on the CAUT Report"
    MOTION LOST
    In answer to a question the Chairman said that a successful
    motion to set aside normal voting procedures would enable nominations
    to the special committees to be made and voted upon at the March 4
    meeting.

    A motion to table Item 3 of the Agenda was moved, seconded and carried.
    The meeting adjourned at 9.30 p.m.
