    The Minutes of the meeting of 6 March 1967 were approved.

    BUSINESS ARISING
    The President reported that at a meeting of Joint Faculty on 23 March,1967,
    it was agreed unanimously that the three new faculty members on Senate should be
    elected one from each faculty.
    Honorary Degrees. The President reported Lh:: Dr. Marshall McLuhan,
    Dr. Leon Koerner and Mrs. Madge Hogarth would be the recipients of honorary degrees.
    Dr. McLuhan would be the Congregation Speaker.
    Moved by W. Vidaver, seconded by A.F.C. Heari
    "that Senate congratulates the Committee on Honorary
    Degrees on arranging for the Congregation Speaker and
    recipients of honorary degrees"

    NEW BUSINESS
    A.
    GRADUATION DIPLOMAS
    Examples were shown to the Senate and the University Committee on
    Graphics and Design recommended one to Senate for adoption.
    Moved by J.L. Dampier, seconded by K.E. Rieckhoff
    "that the recommendation of the Committee be accepted"
    MOTION CARRIED
    It was recommended to Senate that Helvetica instead of Optima type face
    be used for the diplomas.
    Moved by D.H. Sullivan, seconded by G. Kirchner
    "that the Senate accept the substitute type Helvetica"
    MOTION CARRIED
    There was discussion as to whether at Bachelor's level Honors standing
    should be identified by the use of the word "Honors" on the diploma.

    There was discussion as to whether the Master's and Doctoral diplomas
    should show the field in which the degree was obtained, e.g."M.Sc.(Chemistry)".
    Moved by J.L. Dampier, seconded by Chancellor
    "that the Master's diploma show M.Sc., M.A. or M.A.(Education or
    M.Sc.(Education), and not the field in which the degree was
    obtained"

    "that the Ph.D. diploma should not show the field in which
    the degree was obtained"

    B. ACADEMIC BOARD
    There was considerable discussion of the relationship of the Academic
    Board to the University, and of the role of the University representatives
    on the Academic Board.
    Moved by K.E. Rieckhoff, seconded by W. Williams
    "that the two University repre ciltives on the Academic Board
    be requested to provide to Senot:: a regular written report on
    the activities of the Academic Board"
    MOTION CARRIED
    It was agreed that the Academic Board be iiiformd that if major matters
    arose that Senate considered to be of interest to the Academic Board, these
    would be communicated to it following the decision in Senate.
    Senate also agreed that certain statistical information regarding transfer
    studies recently requested by the Academic Board from the Registrar should be
    forwarded to it.

    C.
    REPORT OF SENATE COMMITTEE ON KINESIOGY
    The Senate Committee on Kinesiology presented to Senate for ratification
    its recommended terms of reference which were:
    l.(a)
    The
    Committee's recommendations on curriculum
    shall be submitted to Senate. Departments and/or
    Faculties need not concur.
    (b) Recommendations to Senate that specific courses of
    the Kinesiology program be offered by certain
    Departments should be made after consultation
    with the Departments concerned.

    Any budgetary recommendations required to
    implement the curriculum, facilities and/or staff
    recommendations of the Committee shall be
    submitted to Senate.
    3.
    Hiring of staff to handle this program is the
    responsibility of the Departmts concerned.
    If Departments experience contU.ts of interests
    as a result of specific appointtnmts, they are to
    bring the matter before this Committee for
    resolution of such conflicts.
    4.
    This Committee has the responsibility of
    recommending to Senate the degree requirements for
    the Kinesiology program.

    "that Senate ratify the recommendations of the Committee"

    D. BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COURSE CHANGES
    .
    Certain course changes included in thc C:alandar had now received
    Faculty approval and final Senate approval 1r these was requested.
    Moved by W. Vidaver, seconded by K.E. Rieckhoff
    "that these changes be accepted by Senate"

    GRADE DISTRIBUTIONS, FALL 1966 and

    COURSE GRADES.
    There was discussion of the inconsistencies in grading indicating varying
    practices in departments in examination techniques and grading practices.
    It was suggested that a Senate Committee beset up to examine the examination
    grading practices.
    It was agreed to table the discussion of the Fall grade distributions and
    to request the Faculties of Arts and Education who had not yet done so to
    comment on them for the next meeting of Senate.

    use in the University, and to make recommendations to
    Senate"

    It was agreed that the President should consult with the Deans to
    establish the membership of this Committee.

    S1ThThER REPLACEMT FOR W. VIDAVER.
    K.E. Rieckhoff stated that the Sciene Faculty had elected by
    acclamation G. Geeri to be W. Vidaver's replacement on Senate for the
    Summer semester.
    Moved by K.E. Rieckhoff, seconded by D.H. Sullivan
    "that G. Geen replace W. Vidaver on Senate during the
    Summer semester"
    MOTION CARRIED
    It was also agreed that a replacement for . Vidaver on the Library
    Committee would be nominated from the Science •aculty.
    3. H. CONTINUING EDUCATION
    C.L. Hamilton's paper was discussed.
    Moved by A.R. MacKinnon, seconded by K.E. Rieckhoff
    "that Senate endorse the two recommendations in C.L. Hamilton's
    paper, but that a note be made that further study of continuing
    education is necessary, with a report to Senate within the
    next six months"
    During discussion it was proposed that a Committee be set up to produce
    a plan for continuing education which would not overlap the programs at Vancouver
    City College and the University of British Columbia.
    The President suggested that the motion be coupled with a request to
    A.R. MacKinnon and C.L. Hamilton that they consult with this Committee and Deans
    of Faculties and try to identify the proper role of Simon Fraser University in
    this broad context. Senate expressed a wish to engage in further discussion
    with the Inter-Universities Committee on Continuing Education, and also enjoined

    the Deans of Faculties to continue the discussion in their Faculty meetings.
    The motion was withdrawn.

    for extension work pending the receipt of a report from

    K.E. Rieckhoff withdrew his proposed motion on this question.

    List of Awards.
    Moved by A.R. MacKinnon, seconded by G. Kirchner
    "that Senate congratulate those who have received awards as
    specified in the President's memorandum of March 28, 1967,
    and that this list of persons receiving grants should be
    circulated to members of Senate"
