There was general agreement that in future when new courses
are presented to Senate more information about what the
course is about, why it must be offered and how it fits into
the curriculum should be forwarded to Senate.

    GRADUATE CALENDAR
The Chairman drew attention to the table of contents for the
Graduate Calendar and reported that the Graduate Studies
Committee had looked at the entire Calendar in some detail
so it was not felt necessary to provide the Senate with
copies of material, which had already been approved by Senate
for the Undergraduate Calendar. The detailed information then
which Senate now had to consider was restricted to the Faculty
    Submissions.
    THE FACULTY OF ARTS
The paragraph dealing with registration was questioned but it
was finally decided to accept the present wording with a
suggestion that the Arts Faculty review the wording and attempt
    to clarify the intention.
Moved by K. E. Rieckhoff, seconded by R. J. Baker
"that the Residence and Time Limit specifications
be uniform across the Faculties and that it be:
    Residence Requirements
The minimum residence requirement for the M.Sc. degree is
one year. The requirement for the Ph.D. degree is three years
of residence from B.Sc. (Hons.) or equivalent.
Under certain circumstances and with the permission of his
Supervisory Committee, a student may take part of his graduate
    study off campus.

effect that Faculty Members of Assistant Professor
rank and above only, are available as senior
    supervisors of graduate students."
    MOTION DEFEATED
The Senate was in favour of restricting the right to supervise
Graduate Students as suggested but preferred to leave the policing of
    this to the Departments.
    -
    DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS AND COMMERCE
The Senate commented that the Department of Economics and Commerce
submission seemed rather long and detailed
    .but made no firm
recommendation for change except as has already been mentioned.
The Department was requested to list only those courses which were
definitely going to be offered in the period covered by the Calendar.

    DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY
It was suggested that the title of course number 801 (The Philosophy
of Geography) be changed to a more descriptive and commonly under-
    stood title.
    DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
The Senate took exception to the wording regarding the resources
of the university library and left it to the Registrar and the

jected to the wording regarding Language Requirements and requested
the Department to change this wording.

The Department was requested to re-word the section dealing with
admissions to clarify the fields from which candidates can be
    drawn.
    DEPARTMENT OF P.S.A.
There was some concern expressed over the requirement of only one
course for a Ph.D. candidate. However, no firm recommendation was
    • made to change this but it was understood that the Senate would,
at some future date, consider the whole question of the relative
waiting of thesis and course work for graduate degrees.
    DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY
    No comment.
    FACULTY OF EDUCATION
The Faculty submission was approved as presented with the comment
