SUBJECT:. LOWER DIVISION COURSE REQUIREMENTS
FOR MATHEMATICS MAJORS AND HONORS STUDENTS
The Mathematics Department wishes to change lower division course requirements
for majors and honors students for both the B.Sc. and the B.A. programs in the
following way. The first part of item (i) at the bottom of page 331of the
1975-1976 calendar, which now reads
(i) to obtain credit by the end of the fourth level for the
following lower division Mathematics courses:
MATH 151-3, 152-3, 232-3, 253-4 and at least three-of
the courses listed in the following groups:
MATH 141-2, 142-2, 161-3, 180-3, 241-2
No more than one of CMPT 102-2 or 103-3 (or
MATH 106-3)
No more than one of MATH 194-3 or 196-3 (or
MATH 195-3)
is to be changed to read
(i) to obtain credit by the end of the fourth level for the
following lower division Mathematics courses:
MATH 151-3, 152-3, 232-3, 253-4 and at least three of
MATH 141-2,
142-2, 161-3, 180-3, 194-3, 195-3, 196-3, 241-2,
CMPT 100-3,.cM p
T 102-2, CMPT 103-3, and CMPT 105-3. Of
these three courses, at most one may be a geometry course
(MATH 194-3, 195-3, 196-3) and at most one may be a
computing science course (CMPT 100-3, 102-2, 103-3, 105-3). -
The effect of this change is to permit a student to use CMPT 105-3
(or its predecessor 100-3) to satisfy the requirement. CMPT 105-3,
the concepts and procedures course, may be more suitable for students
interested in Mathematical Logic and in Automata Theory than CMPT 103-3,
the programming course (or its predecessors 102-2 and MATH 106-3).

-2-
Please note that there is nothing to prevent a student from taking both
CMPT 103-3 and 105-3, or both MATH 194-3 and 196-3, and some students
would be well advised to make such choices, keeping in mind the fact that
a second geometry or computing science course will not help meet the
• ?
requirement (but can be used as part of the 120 or 132 credit hours needed
for graduation).
Reference to MATH 106-3 has been dropped, since that course is now ancient
history.
