BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES 310-3.,
THE PLANTS & ANIMALS OF BRIT I SF! COLUMBIA.
This course was designed for the student: who wishes to know
more about the Natural History of British Columbia, with
special reference to the higher plants, birds, and mammals.
The emphasis in the course is upon developing skill in
?
observing and identifying various major flora and fauna.
?
The use of various source books and keys is also stressed.
The organisms are not considered in isolation, but rather
in the context of the Biotic Regions of the province.jn which
they occur. Field work is an integral part of the course
and the emphasis of the course in terms of various groups
may change depending on the location of the course offering,
and the season of the year.
This course will be of special interest to Teachers, Recreation
Workers, and general biologists.
MAIN TOPICS.
.An Introduction to Taxonomy and Nomenclature: How are things named
and why?
-What do you need to know to identify a flowering plant---an
introduction to basic plant structure, with an emphasis on plant
Family characteristics.
-Major Flowering and Coniferous Plants of B.C.---Trees, Shrubs and
Flowers which are the most commonly encountered in the field.
-A review of the major Biotic areas of B.C., with their major
flora and Fauna.
-An introduction to the field study of Birds: Bird morphology, and
main Bird families in Western North America.
-An Int:roductjon to the field study of mammals: major characteristics
used in the identification of mammals and a review of mammal orders
