The Faculty Of Education receives a number oJ roquests
for periods of supervised teaching in classrooms from ex-teachers
who are planning to return to the classroom, to change from
.elementary to secondary school teaching or vice-versa, or who
have recently arrived in British Columbia from other countries.
We have also been asked by the Department of Education to
arrange supervised practicumS of this kind for teachers from
non-English speaking countries in order to provide them with
data which will guide their decision whether to grant teacher
certification. Most of the people concerned have already
cornpl.cted teacher education programs in B.C. or elsewhere and
?
have or would receive transfer credit for both Education 401
and 405 (the two practicums in the P.D.P.)
In the past we have made informal arrangements with
teachers in schools In order to accommodate the most deserving
of these requests.
?
ln.some cases this has meant a serious
imposition and because the arrangements have been informal
and unofficial it has not been possible to charge fees or
offer
honoraria to the teachers concerned, nor has it been possible to
record information about what has been done on the students'
transcripts.
It 'is anticipated that enrolment in this course will
be kept small (6 to 12 students per semester) and that place-
ments will be arranged in such a way that supervision can be
given by faculty associates in schools which they visit on a
regular basis.
It is anticipated that the course may he used as a
means of assessing quality of teaching for students with credit
for Education 401 and 462 and prior teaching experience, who
wish to challengeEducati
on
405.
