Rationale for Calendar Changes in the PhD Arts Education Program
#1. Added new course EDUC 943-5 Arts-Based Inquiry in Educational Research
Rationale: This course provides students with advanced education and training in the contemporary ideas
and methodologies of arts-based research that are considered essential for students undertaking doctoral
dissertations in arts education. Currently there is no course
in the Faculty of Education meeting this need
and students have to go to
USC under the Western Dean's agreement to gain access to comparable
material. EDUC 943-5 provides advanced study in research ideas and methods that are compatible with the
content and methods of artistic inquiry and takes advantage of existing
and new faculty strengths in the
area.

#2. Added new course EDUC 944-5 Aesthetic Ways of Knowing and Education
Rationale: This course provides important historical, cultural, indigenous and aesthetic contextual knowledge
for artist educators researching the field of arts and aesthetic education. Currently there is
no course in the
Faculty of Education meeting this need. EDUC 944-5 provides advanced study of the role of the arts and
aesthetic experience in human development, epistemological perspectives and transformation and takes
advantage of existing faculty strengths
in the area.
#3. Changing EDUC
901-5 Seminar in the History of Educational Thought and EDUC 902-5
Interdisciplinary Seminar In Contemporary Educational Theory to an ONE OF choice for the
program.
The new choice of either EDUC
901 or EDUC 902, is intended to provide core educational studies
background for
all students but also make space for the inclusion of an arts course.
#4. Deletion
of EDUC 910-5 Directed Readings
EDUC 910-5 is being deleted to accommodate one new arts course.
#5.
Arts Education Calendar Changes: General Comments
The current CTI Arts Education PhD program, which includes the following courses: EDUC 901.5, EDUC
902-5, EDUC 945-5, and EDUC 910-5, has been running for sixteen years and is
in need of upgrade.
Currently the
PhD program includes only one taught Arts course, which is seen as inadequate. The
proposed program includes the new courses EDUC
943.5 and EDUC 944-5, the current course EDUC 945-
5, and either EDUC 901 or EDUC 902.
A one course reduction in the Arts Education Master's program should relieve the instructor fte allocations.
The Arts Education PhD program is a biennial program.
The course changes are designed to bring the program
up to date and maintain its high profile as a leading,
competitive, and unique arts education program
in Canada and internationally, having a current enrolment of
27
PhD students. During the recent round of applications, arts faculty have recommended acceptance of 7
new
PhD Arts Education students. Arts PhD courses will be open to students across the university and
within the Faculty. Since there is no doctorate in the School for Contemporary Arts there are no overlap
issues and this also widens the potential audience for our
PhD program.
