Physiology and Kinesiology.
Rationale: As part
of Faculty restructuring the name of the School of Kinesiology
was changed to the Department
of Biomedical Physiology & Kinesiology,
therefore calendar entries have been changed to reflect this.
2. Reference to dissertation proposal should be removed.
Rationale: The current entry
is incorrect. This paragraph should have been
deleted one year ago when the comprehensive examination format was
changed.
3. Kin 802 is no longer offered by the department and this requirement is replaced
by taking a graduate-level statistics or research methods course approved by the
graduate committee.
Rationale:
It is important to have a graduate-level foundation in this area.
Arrangements have been made with the Faculty
of Health Sciences to allow our
students to
enroll in HSCI 801-4: Biostatistics I. Other options are available for
those requiring a more fundamental (mathematical) grounding
in the topic.
4. The concept
of core courses has been abandoned to allow more flexible
structuring of the graduate program for each student. A minimum
of 18 units, with
only one course specified (Kin
801), another must be a graduate-level statistics
or research methods course (as indicated
in point 3). Of the remaining 12 units, 9
must be BPK courses.
Rationale: There has been an arbitrary distinction between core and non-core
BPK graduate courses. Furthermore, student flexibility
in course selection is
required to design a program that best meets their training needs, to facilitate the
development
of new courses through emerging graduate streams
(Neuromechanics, Chronic Disease Prevention, Cardiac Physiology etc.).

Change From:
Population Biology
Consideration of the ecological and genetic processes acting at the popUlation level.
Change To:
Population Dynamics and Demography
Theory
and practice of population modeling and demographic analysis.
This course has suffered from infrequent scheduling and from variation in content in
differing
offerings
(sometimes
it
is'population
ecology,
sometimes
population
genetics).
Proposed changes to the course description solidify the course as an ecology offering, and
part of what is envisioned as a new, 2-course "core" that would be appropriate for most
graduate students
in
Ecology and Evolution. The new description is within the area of
expertise
of several members of the department, including the proposed initial instructors
(palen and Roitberg). First offering proposed for September of 2010, with an expected
enrollment of ..... 20.
Recent offerings of Population Genetics at the graduate level have been as a special
topics offering cross-numbered with the undergraduate (fourth-year) course of the same
name, which can continue.
