in research
and in practice, it has a strong philosophical and conceptual orientation which encourage students
to view issues and problems in the workplace in more complex and educative ways.
Core Courses
MEd and MA students complete all of
EDUC 813-5 Organizational Theory and Analyses
EDUC 815-5 Administrative Processes
EDUC
817-5 Policy Processes
EDUC
818-5 Leadership Studies
MEd Requirements
Students will normally be admitted to the MEd course work/comprehensive exam program. In
addition to the four core courses, students will complete
EDUC 811-5 Fieldwork I
plus two additional courses
(lO units) approved by the co-ordinator.
EDUC 883-5 MEd Comprehensive Examination follows completion of course work
requirements. It is held once a year, during summer session.
MA Requirements
Students admit1ed to the MEd program may, on the senior supervisor's recommendation, transfer
into the MA program. The
MA requires the four core courses above plus EDUC 864. Students
must demonstrate appropriate research competence which may necessitate completing one
or
both of the following:
EDUC 863-5 Quantitative Methods in Educational Research
EDUC 867-5 Qualitative Methods in Educational Research
Students may also complete one or more electives as required

Graduate Programs, Faculty of Education, SFU
Rationale
for Proposed Changes
Educational Leadership Masters
Program
(Please read this summary in conjunction with the Calendar Description Changes)
#1 Change the MEd credit requirement from seven courses (35 units) to six courses (30 units).
Rationale: Graduate Programs' earlier curriculum proposal
(Passed Senate on March
I.
S10-46) sought to
reduce all MED degrees in the Faculty of Education from 31 to 30 units of required coursework. This
request for a reduction in units for the MEd degree in Educational Leadership is to bring this program in
line with the approved MEd degree unit reduction passed by Senate.
#2 Remove EDUC 815-5 Administrative Processes from the Core Courses (MEd and MA).
Rationale: This course, EDUC 815, is no longer required as a core course, but may be taken as an elective
in some specific program designs. Some academic content from EDUC 815 has been redirected to both
EDUC 818 (Leadership Studies) and EDUC 813 (Organizational Theory and
Analysis),
which remain as
core courses.
#3 Add EDUC 811-5 Fieldwork I to the Core Courses (MEd and MA).
Rationale: EDUC 811-5 has been scheduled as an elective course for many Educational Leadership cohort
programs. This course supports
the field-based research component of this program and now is moved to a
core
COurse for all Leadership programs.
#4 Add EDUC 822-5 Evaluation of Educational Programs OR EDUe 864-5 Research DeSign in
Education to the MEd degree program and EDUC 864-5 Research Design in Education to the MA
degree program.
Rationale:
Both EDUC 822 and EDUC 864 courses directly related to the field-based research and
program evaluation components of the Educational Leadership programs. In the MEd degree route,
students have a choice
of working towards either program evaluation or research design. The MA degree
requires research design. EDUC 822
is a course that has been successfully offered in some Educational
Leadership programs to date. These course(s)
are offered early in the cohort program and are precursors to
EDUC 811 Fieldwork I, which is offered at the end of the program.
#5 Change degree transfer apprm'al.
Rationale: All students enter the Educational Leadership program on the MEd degree route. To transfer to
a MA degree program requires a recommendation from the Senior Supervisor and approval of the Director
of Graduate Programs. Students may move to the MA after completing three courses. This allows a
student(s), senior supervisor, academic coordinator
and Director to work together in support of the student.
#6 Clarify conceptual differences between MEd and MA in Educational Leadership
Description:
The MEd
in Educational Leadership is a degree carefully focused on helping practitioner-student, reflect
on,
and strengthen their leadership capacities.
It
is designed for educators interested in improving their
practice through in-depth scholarly study and action research. This degree
is a Professional Graduate
Programs.
The MA
in Educational Leadership is a degree focused on careful study of educational leadership issues
and content and in depth study and application of research and research methods. MEd students, accepted
into the MA program, will move to a campus-based research degree program. and will be assessed
research-based
fees.

Rationale for
Changes
We propose to de-link the EdD from Educational Leadership, thereby allowing the EdD
model of programming to be offered in other areas of educational practice. When this de-
linking
is achieved, the currently existing Educational Leadership becomes one among
many possible
EdD programs.

theoretical and professional studies plus advanced scholarly inquiry in education. Both
degrees culminate in a comprehensive examination
(EDUC 983) and a doctoral thesis

Rationale for

We are removing the reference to the specific programming area: leadership in education.
With de-linking of the
EdD from Leadership in Education, the EdD program description
needs to remove the specific reference to leadership in education. The de-linked

areas of educational practice.
