We are requesting to change the units of the "Immune System I" course
    (MBB
    726) from a 3-unit
    cour!!~
    tb
    a 4-upit./
one, and in so doing to increase the amount of lecture time from 3 to 4 hours per week. Thus the vector-woula-
    /
    change
    from 3-1-0 to 4-1-0.
The added unit would allow the instructor to have 3 hours' lecture time per chapter covered in the textbook, and
    continue
the 1-hour tutorial time needed for undergrad and grad student presentations. Students have a heavy
reading load in this course covering
-13 chapters in as many weeks; it is very dense reading of 30-40 pages per
    week. Students have overwhelmingly supported
the idea of increasing the course units for several years now, to
reflect the real amount of work they do for the course. We are not proposing to increase their workload, or
    increasing
the amount of material covered, but rather to increase the instructor contact time with the students in
reviewing the material, and in enhancing the course with supplemental experiences (described below), A copy of
the course syllabus for Fall 2009 offering follows this attachment.
    The extra
time will allow the instructor to continue giving an exam every 2 weeks, which is key to students'
learning, And the extra hour will help make up
for the lecture hours lost during Fall semester from the two
    holidays, Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to contact me.
    Sincerely,
    ~~
    Nick Harden
    Chair,
    MBS
    Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.
