RATIONALE FOR INTRODUCTION OF THIS COURSE:
Since 1981, The School for the Contemporary Arts has offered a course in Interdisciplinary
Collaboration every
Spring semester under the Selected Topics course number
FPA 489-5
Interdisciplinary Projects
in Fine and Performing Arts.
This selected topics course was the
primary one for students wishing to collaborate with students in disciplines other than their own.
In addition, since 1998, the Interdisciplinary Collaboration course has been paired with
FP A
813- Interdisciplinary Graduate Studio. The course has always been offered at full capacity
of
eighteen students.
However, in recent years, various faculty members in Contemporary Arts have been offering
FPA 489 with different topics, as the course was originally intended, while the Collaboration
course continued to be offered using this same
number- FPA 489-5. Student transcripts were
beginning to show numerous entries for
FP A 489 because they were taking different courses
taught under the same number.
Since the Interdisciplinary Collaboration course has become a
regular and consistent part
of our offerings for nearly thirty years, it's appropriate that it should

have its own number and identity in order to release FP A 489 for use by different faculty as a
selected topics course like it was originally intended.
Last year, the
School created a lower division interdisciplinary studio course FP A 285 -
Interdisciplinary
Studio - Composition/Collaboration for students to gain skills and insight into
the art
of composition within an interdisciplinary context. By offering FP A 485 Interdisciplinary
Collaboration, we have completed a series
of courses in the Calendar designed to take advantage
of our unique mission within the School: that of creating opportunities for artists who are seeking
collaborative experiences with colleagues in disciplines other than their own.

Provide details on how existing instructional resources will be redistributed to accommodate this
new course. For example, will another course be eliminated or will the frequency
of offering of

other courses be reduced; are there changes in pedagogical style or class sizes that allow for this
additional course offering?
Under
the selected topics number FP A 489-5
J
Interdisciplinary Collaboration has been
part
of the regular teaching load of Professor D. MacIntyre for 28 years. In addition, there
are numerous faculty members capable and interested in teaching this course, so that on a
rotational
basis
J
some elective courses within various programs of the school will be
taught every second year. The offering of an interdisciplinary studio course at the upper
division
is something the school has done for many years and it is time that a course titled
Collaboration
be on the books and available in an interdisciplinary School such as ours.
With the
move of Contemporary Arts to Woodwards, we have the facilities and proximity
to offer such a course regularly - perhaps every semester, if possible. Now, on a rotational
basis
J
faculty from various programs within the School will teach this new course under its
own
name and number. This means that every few years, one elective course within a
program
may have to be taught every second year to accommodate this new course.
List any outstanding resource issues to
be addressed prior to implementation: space, laboratory
equipment

etc.

Dance Area Curricular Changes
School for the Contemporary Arts
As the SCA prepares for the move into the Woodwards facility in downtown Vancouver,
the Dance Area is shifting its curriculum to accommodate greater flexibility for our
students and to facilitate more integration
of the areas. Part of our effort has included
scheduling our disciplinary training in the first half
of the day- keeping our afternoons
more available for interdisciplinary courses and collaborative projects.
With the increase in studios, the dance area is streamlining its technique courses so they
can all be offered at the same time
in the morning. This is not only in effort to increase
flexibility in course planning, but also improve the pedagogical structure
of our technique
courses.
We will be able to offer three levels of technique, giving better attention to the
technical needs
of each student. This shift requires that we add two technique classes to
our first year courses FPA 122 and
123 (Contemporary Dance I and II). Based on
feedback from our first year students, this change will enhance the first year experience
and better prepare our students for the upper level studio courses.
We are also proposing to lower the upper division requirements by four credits so our
students have more flexibility in their third and fourth years
of study. As there are
growing opportunities for dance students to take interdisciplinary courses and participate
in our honors program, we feel this change will accommodate greater opportunity for
individual students to purse their area
of focus.

RATIONALE:
The Dance area wishes to lower the overall credits needed at the upper division to allow
for greater flexibility for dance majors to explore interdisciplinary opportunities within
the School. As our School prepares to move into the Woodward building,
we are
preparing our area for greater integration as an interdisciplinary program.
