Honors.
Programs
The undergraduate program for the School for the Contemporary Arts is an integrated series
of Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Major programs and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) major in Art
and Culture Studies. The new Honors programs are designed to further integrate our areas
of
specialization as we embark on an exciting transition into the Woodward's building in
downtown Vancouver.
The
School for the Contemporary Arts is committed to the high quality of disciplinary
training
in' each area of study within an environment that encourages interdisciplinary
collaboration. These six programs were created for students seeking greater depth within
their major and also provide an opportunity
to pursue interdisciplinary collaborations. This is
an auspicious moment to introduce the Honors programs in the SCA as the move of the
School for the Contemporary Arts into Woodward's will strengthen and expand already
established links with the professional Vancouver
art community.
Sincerely,
Rob Kitsos, Contemporary Arts

All Honors Programs Contemporary Arts Version 11

PREAMBLE
Over the past two years, Contemporary Arts (SCA) undertook a comprehensive review of our
curriculum. As part
of our research, we conducted a survey of senior students in all areas.
Many students responded positively
to an honors program option. There are a number of
students in all SCA programs who already take over the 120 credit hour minimum through
concentrating in more depth in their program area
as well as interdisciplinary collaboration
projects. As a result,
an honors program is a natural evolution as a School-wide initiative.
As recruitment for prospective students has become increasingly competitive
it's logical to
offer an Honors program
to meet student demand and prepare them for future educational
and career opportunities.
An honors program will allow excellent students to develop greater
competency as artists, researchers and writers, and will help
to prepare them for graduate
work.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The six programs proposed
here
are all built on
the
foundation of the five BFA majors and
our
BA program. They do not require additional resources, as the courses and faculty to
support these programs are already
in
place. This initiative will result in a more
comprehensive and high quality education for some
of our most committed and highest
achieving students.
To apply for program entry, students complete the same lower and upper division
requirements as the major program, and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average
in FPA
courses, and a 3.0 CGPA. To complete the program, 132 units are required, including the
selection
of listed courses, and maintenance of a minimum 3.5 grade point average in upper-
division
FP A courses.

AIMS/GOALS/OBJECTIVES
The SCA Honors program is designed to encourage its most committed students and give
them a more comprehensive education. The program encourages any student who wishes to
explore their discipline
in greater depth and or explore interdisciplinary work. The honors
degree also helps prepare students for graduate programs. The addition
of an Honors
program
will assist us in recruiting and retaining outstanding students and to better enable
them
to meet the demands of the professional world.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Honors students will take approximately 12-15 more upper division credits from selected
courses to achieve the university standard
of 48 - 50 units in specified upper division courses
in the honors subject or field.
In addition
to the requirements for the BFA and BA degrees in the SCA, the Honors degree
requires a cumulative
GPA of3.0 and a 3.5 OPA in FPA courses.
DISTINCTIVE CHARACTERISTICS
Art and Culture Studies
Art and Culture Studies equips students with interdisciplinary knowledge and intellectual .
skills that
will allow them to work in and among the contemporary arts. The interdisciplinary
context
of the School, which is unique in British Columbia. is an ideal environment for an in-
depth investigation
of dance, film, music, theatre, and visual art. The degree provides a
knowledge
of and sensitivity to the distinctive qualities of specific art forms, while allowing
students to chart their own interdisciplinary path according to their interests.
In addition to
contributing
to the education of students across the Faculty of Communications,
Art
and
Technology, Art and
Culture Studies is excellent preparation for careers in the contemporary
arts, such as curating, arts \\oTIting, and art administration. It is also a springboard for a variety
of graduate degrees, including art history, the history of design, cinema studies, cultural
studies, and performance studies.
Dance
The BFA Dance program at
SFU, the largest program of its kind west of Toronto, is
distinctive from other programs in Canada through its focus on choreography as well
as
performance, interdisciplinary collaboration and its emphasis on dance history, aesthetics and
performance studies. BFA Dance Honors Program allows for greater specialization
in the
field of dance and interdisciplinary creation. With the new environment offered through our
downtown Woodward's move students will have opportunities to create and perform in
world-class spaces.
The integrated approach to disciplines in our school also means that
dance students have a breadth
of experience unavailable to students in more traditional dance
programs.
7

Film
This program is intended for outstanding students who wish to study Film beyond the major
program's course work. It will allow students to extend their knowledge of film history and
film theory, which
is an integral part of a film maker's education, to extend the scope of their
academic pursuits
in other disciplines, and encourage greater opportunities to engage in
interdisciplinary projects. The
BFA honors degree will allow us to strengthen our program,
give us greater latitude
in distinguishing it from other similar programs, make it more
desirable
to the applicants we seek and assist us in producing a cadre of knowledgeable and
artistically informed film makers.
Music
The undergraduate music program at SFU is distinctive from other programs in British
Columbia and Canada through its focus on cQmposition, electroacoustic music and
collaboration.
The context within a school that also includes art and culture studies, dance,
film, theatre, and visual art means that our students have a breadth
of experience unavailable
to students in more traditional music programs. The honors option will further enrich and
strengthen the distinctiveness provided by
music study at SFU.
Theatre
There is currently no honors program in theatre performance in the province of British
Columbia. As the School for Contemporary Arts moves to the Woodwards location we have
a strategic opportunity to draw students from a wider demographic base.
An
honors program
will be an additional impetus for these students to attend what is already seen as an
exceptional program. The theatre performance program is committed to training theatre
artists with solid grounding in technique and a critical perspective on art making.
OUT two-
year cohort studio approach is a rigorous actor training which emphasizes both the individual
and the ensemble.
An
honors program allows students an opportunity to extend their studies
and take advantage
of the opportunities for collaboration afforded within the unique
interdisciplinary setting
of the School for Contemporary Arts. The honors program will also
better situate students who may be preparing for entrance into graduate programs.
Visual Art
Our program already produces more notable artists in relation to its size than other, larger
programs
in Canada. We are also recognized for an approach to art making that is rigorous
yet experimental, and familiarizes students with the most challenging visual art
of our times.
OUT
faculty members are internationally recognized artists who are also actively participating
in
the Vancouver visual arts communities. Now that we have an additional new facility in
downtown Vancouver, and with the opening
of the Audain Gallery and the launch of the
Audain Visiting Artist Program, our Visual Art Program will have intensified local, national
and international visibility.
Our intention is a focused visual art education that when
appropriate may include an interdisciplinary focus.

ENROLMENT PLAN FOR THE LENGTH OF THE PROGRAM
In 2007.08 the SCA conducted a survey that indicated a strong interest in a

POLICIES ON STUDENT EVALUATIONS
SCA Students will be evaluated for entry into the program based on the seriousness of their
commi~ment>
the maturity of their studio and theoretical work, and a minimum OP A of 3.5 in
FPA courses and a 3.0 COPA. For Honors continuance, a 3.5 OPA in FPA courses and a 3.0
CGPA must be maintained. The school reserves the right to limit the number of honors
students if faculty supervision resources are not available; priority will be given to those with
a higher
COP A. Students who have difficulty finding an honors supervisor should contact the
school's honors coordinator.
POLICIES ON FACULTY APPOINTMENT (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)
Courses will be primarily taught by existing faculty from all the areas in the
SeA.
All
faculty including sessionals, and L TEs can teach in the program.
