Anthony Laurence Kupferschmidt
I am a first-year Gerontology Master of Arts student here at Simon Fraser University. My research interests focus
on caregivers of persons with dementia and the psychological effects, both positive and negative, of providing care.
I received my Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Psychology from Queen's University in Kingston, ON in 2003.
While in Kingston, I sat on the Board of Directors of the Alzheimer Society of Kingston for one year. I also served
for two years as Vice Coordinator Administration of an approximately fifty-member volunteer-based community
organization. In this capacity, I was responsible for the agency's policies, Constitution and by-laws and for ensuring
compliance with the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
I also completed my Bachelor of Arts degree in Gerontology at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON last April.
For the duration of my studies, I was selected to serve as the Undergraduate Member of the Gerontology/ Geography
Student Research Ethics Committee. In this capacity, I reviewed ethics protocols for research involving human
participants. As a component of this position, I participated in a half-day professional development session on the
ethics of research in humans. I am also familiar with the Tr-council Policy Statement on Ethical Conduct for
Research Involving Humans.
Through my work on numerous research initiatives over the last five years in different institutions, I have
considerable familiarity with and experience preparing and evaluating research ethics board applications. Though
new to SFU, I am active within the Gerontology Graduate Caucus and serve as the departmental representative to
the university-wide Graduate Issues Committee. I have also familiarized myself with past minutes of the
university's Research Ethics Board, as well as all of the Board's forms and the current and proposed versions of the
University Research Ethics Review Policy R20.01.
I hope to bring my prior experience to the capacity of Student Member on the Simon Fraser University Research
Ethics Board. Thank you very much in advance for your consideration.
Cohn McInnes
Dear Members of Senate
I am writing to express interest in becoming a student member of the SFU Research Ethics Committee. Currently, I
am a 4th year Biology Honours Program student with aspirations to enter the medical field. I have a keen interest in
ethical issues, such as health care privatization and research procedures, and realize the fundamental importance of
having proper ethics standards. Furthermore, although this is a preliminary goal, I hope to eventually get involved
with an ethics committee on the C.M.A. (Canadian Medical Association) and therefore feel that being on the SFU
Ethics Committee would be an excellent and interesting way to get more exposure to the procedures involved.
I am currently involved in my second undergraduate research class (BISC 499) with the B.C. Cancer Agency where
I have observed the importance of ethics standards. With the BCCA I am helping with a study aimed to give dentists
the tools to identify pre-malignant lesions within the mouth. While gathering data from patients one of my
responsibilities is to cover liability procedures and explain all aspects of the confidentiality agreement: how their
data will be used, who will have access to their records, and I will also answer their questions/concerns. This process
has shown me the importance of establishing clear, and ethically sound, research procedures before commencing a
study. This upcoming fall I will be doing a more in-depth research (ISS) which will contribute to the BCCA study,
and therefore feel that the work I will put into this committee will be very applicable to my future.
Finally, I will still be at SFU next spring and therefore, if elected, I will be able to commit to the entire duration of
the position (May
31st,
2007).
Sasha Uhlmann
I am currently a masters student in the Faculty of Health Sciences (Population and Public Health) and the student
senate representative for the Faculty. As a student in Public Health I have learned much in the way of research ethics
and requirements for research proposals. I will be conducting research of my own and am therefore very interested
in the process. I would offer the committee current knowledge on research ethics as well as the desire and ability to
learn more.
Thank you for considering my application.
