Reasons:
As evidenced by the events of the past several months,
Senate cannot afford to cancel its regular meetings in
June, July or August. Although Senate could not have
averted the crisis, if it were in session, it, neverthe-
less, could have provided some of the badly-needed leader-
ship. It could have taken the initiative in pressing
for reforms in the university and thus, assumed some of
its responsibilities delegated by law.
1.
2.
Furthermore, over 12 memb'ers of Senate petitioned the
then Chairman of Senate to call an emergency meeting
?
?
of
Senate before June 1 to discuss apart from other
business, the reports of the
3
Senate committees studying
• the CAUT Report. It was indeed regretable that the
Chairman denied our request.
3.
There is no reason whatsoever to cancel meetings in June
.July, or August. The University operates on a trimester
system. Thus, the Summer Semester is an integral and equal
part of the academic year like the other two semesters.
