Subject
ADMISSION FROM B.C. INDEPENDENT
SCHOOLS
From. .
UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
DECEMBER 20, 1983
Date
....................................................
Action undertaken by the Senate Undergraduate Admissions Board
at its meeting of 14 December, 1983 gives rise to the following motion:
MOTION: "That, provided that-the B.C. Ministry of Education makes
its examinations available, applicants from Group 1 and
non-funded independent secondary schools in British Columbia
be expected to sit examinations in those Grade 12 courses
used to fulfill University entrance requirements, including
secondary school graduation.
These examination results
would be counted in the final grades to the same extent as
if the applicant were attending a public secondary school.
That this change be effective for courses completed in
Summer 1984 or at such time as the examinations become
available to students of B.C. independent secondary schools."
Rationale for the change is provided in the attached paper,
SUAB 122 (revised).

AND PROVINCIAL EXAMINATIONS.
When the provincial Grade 12 examination program was announced in
Fall 1983, the Ministry of Education had stated that the exams would not
be available to students in non-funded and Group I independent B.C.
secondary schools, but would be required for students in Group 2 independent
secondary schools and public secondary schools. The three provincial
universities perceived that this could lead to unfair treatment, especially
since many applicants from the non-funded schools are foreign students.
The Ministry of Education is shortly expected to announce that Group I
and non-funded independent schools may participate in the exam program,
provided they apply in writing to the Ministry by December 1st for the
January sitting and March 1st for the June sitting and agree to comply with
conditions relating to exam security, invigilation etc.
.
The current Senate policy on admission of students from B.C.
independent schools states, "...the University accepts applicants from all
independent schools which adhere to the B.C. High School curriculum, subject
to the same conditions as apply to applicants from B.C. Public Schools".
It would now be appropriate for SUAB to state explicitly that the
"same conditions..." clause shall be understood to mean "must sit provincial
examinations in those Grade 12 subjects required for secondary school
graduation and for admission to the University". At a minimum this will be
English 12, but will normally include at least two of the further three
Grade 12 subjects required.
