Stories of academic dishonesty (plagiarism, fabrication of data, etc.) have made
headlines in the news in recent years. Deliberate acts of sabotage of other people's
work, such as tampering with computer systems (introducing a "virus") or vandalizing
controversial experiments, are probably even more harmful. While such occurrences
are not nearly so common as the news media might lead one to believe, nevertheless,
the problems are serious and must not be ignored. Dishonest behavior at the student
level is a precursor to similar behavior at the professional level. It is important that we
should inculcate standards of academic conduct, and deal effectively with the small
number of offenders.

Senate Library Committee/Library Penalties Appeals Committee:
I have been a member of LPAC for more than a year. Currently, I chair this Committee.
During my previous term, I was exposed to the unique problems and constraints of the
SFU Library and its plans for changes in the future. Having worked in the Library, I also
have an insiders perspective on its operations. I would therefore like to sit on the
SLC/LPAC.
Senate Committee on International Activities:
I am an international student and have two degrees from eastern schools. I am thus
aware of how eastern/South Asian bureaucracies, universities and other systems work.
In my current program at SFU, I am doing a concentration in International Business. I
have also been active in the university's International Club. I feel very motivated in
serving on the SCIA.

I wish to ensure, through my participation on the committees of Senate, that student
issues and concerns are taken into account when decisions are being made. In
particular, SFU must strive to be accessible and affordable for all interested students,
with adequate resources in place to allow for timely completion of his/her chosen

SMITH. Shawn Roderick
Department (undeclared)
Faculty of Arts
I wish to get further involved in this dynamic institution. I feel my lack of years are an
incredible asset in which I hope will come freshness of opinion.
My goals as a student senator serving on these committees is to continue the process
of change, for my fellow students, while still believing I can change the world.
Serving on the B.C. Youth Council for the past two years, during the last of which I was
treasurer, I see my skills learned there would also benefit these senate committees.
One of my major, goals as a senator is to increase the awareness of Simon Fraser
among possible students in the eastern interior of British Columbia.
WADE Shawn
Department of History
Faculty of Arts
I have been on SCAP and SCUB for three years and, in that time, have acquired both a
degree of understanding of and a love for the academic planning and budgetary
planning processes of the University. I believe that the current budgetary and fiscal
situation of the University calls for a student member who has acquired some feel for
how the process works, and who can therefore hopefully contribute constructively to the
academic and budgetary process of the university.
