Gun Control

The attached resolution concerning gun control was unanimously approved

by the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada following the tragic

deaths at Concordia University this August. I would like to present the following

motion for the consideration of our Senate at its November meeting.

"That Senate endorse the strengthening of firearms control provisions in the

Criminal Code, in particular towards improving the screening of firearms

acquisition and prohibiting the possession of handguns by ordinary citizens."

I have two reasons for proposing this motion. First, I hope that adoption of

these proposals would lessen the possibility that similar tragedies would be

repeated at other Canadian universities. Second, I believe that our University

should stand with other Canadian universities in this response to the events at

Concordia. All of our universities are potentially at risk.
