S.92-55
SIMON FRASER UNIVERSITY
FINANCIAL SERVICES
MEMORANDUM
To:
W. R. Heath
From:
Roger W. Ward
Registrar
Vice-President
Financial Services
Subject: Financial Statement Questions
Date:
October 5, 1992
At the meeting of Senate on September 21, 1992 several questions were asked relating to the
Financial Statements for the year ended March 1992 and I undertook to provide additional
information.
In particular, for 1991/92 the university budgeted $89,000 for snow and ice control. This budget
covers all aspects of snow and ice control, such as labour costs, cost of salt, maintenance of snow
removing vehicles, etc. During the year $56,728 of this budget was spent, the remaining $32,092
was netted with other over/under expenditures which resulted in a net surplus of$14,51 I for the
eight Facilities Management Operations cost centres. This surplus was carried forward into
1992/93 in accordance with the University's carryover policy.
With respect to the question relating to Athletic/Recreation fee revenue, I was mistaken in
indicating that this was treated as a cost recovery. In fact for 1991/92 some $815,000 of fee
revenue was included in Student Fees - Other on Statement 3 of the Financial Statements. The
cost recovery of$1 17,000 shown on Schedule 6 is primarily from locker rentals, etc.
Finally, examples of Other sources of Specific Purpose income (page 4 of the Financial
Statements) include, credit course fees, non-credit course fees, property rental income, facility
rental income and numerous small miscellaneous revenue sources. The total amount of non-
government grant income for the Sponsored Research and Specific Purpose funds are shown in
Statement 3 (page 9).
If
can be of any further assistance, please advise.
