Enclosed are the minutes of a meeting the M.Aq. students had with
myself and a Sessional Instructor, Dr. V. Lipovsky on 3 April, 1992.
As a result of this meeting, we have indicated several changes to the
M.Aq. program. These are listed in the enclosed 8 April, 1992
memorandum to M.Aq. faculty and students.
I am writing to address points 4 of this memorandum which deal with
Business courses (see copy of memorandum).
I now have the permission of Dr. S.J. Shapiro, Dean, Faculty of
Business Administration, for our students to register in the
following courses:

Managerial Economics
Introduction to Business Finance
Accounting
Quantitative Methods in Management

DATE: 3 July 1992
At the Departmental Meeting of April 23, 1992, the Chemistry Department, on recommendation of the
Departmental Graduate Studies Committee voted to increase the credit for Chem 801-2: Student Seminar
I and Chem 802-2: Student Seminar
II
from 2 units to 3 units.
The rationale for this change is that the work-load, involving preparation, in-class presentation and
scientific discussion of a recent literature article by the student, plus the reading, evaluation, preparation
for discussion and participation in in-class discussion of all the presentations of the other students in the
class, has turned out to be much greater than anticipated when these courses were introduced in semester
1991-1.
The courses have been mounted on two separate occasions 91-1 and 92-1, and the proposal for the
reassignment of course credit follows evaluation of these courses by graduate students, course instructors
and the Departmental Graduate Studies Committee.
Would you please place this item on the agenda of the next Faculty of Science meeting for consideration.

Graduate Program including:

Co-operative Education in Mathematics and
Statistics at the Graduate Level
It is proposed that the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in-
troduce a co-operative education component into its Graduate Programs.
From the experience gained in the administration of the undergraduate co-
operative education program it seems that it should be possible to find work
assignments for at least some of our graduate students which would broaden
their experience and help them in their future careers.
The intention is to proceed in an incremental fashion. It will probably be
impossible to arrange work-semesters for all graduate students who would like
them. Care will have to be exercised so that the introduction of Co-operative
Education at the graduate level does not adversely affect the undergraduate
co-operative Education program.
The following is a suggested calendar entry:
Co-operative Education

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is introducing Co-
operative Education into its graduate program in order to allow
students to gain work experience outside the academic sphere.
Students who are currently enrolled in one of the Department's
M.Sc. or Ph.D. programs may apply to the Department's Grad-
uate Co-operative Education Committee for admission to this
component of the program.
