Enrollment and Scheduling:

=
Justification: Current pedagogical thought and practice, child-rearing methods, and child welfare
programs can not be fully appreciated without reference to the origins of concepts of childhood. A
knowledge of these origins is necessary in order to effect change, reform, or to understand why we follow
certain practices or hold particular beliefs in our relationships with children. This course has been developed
in response to the need for a graduate level course that
will
examine some of the origins of twentieth century
.
concepts of childhood, child-rearing and education in Europe and North America. This course will be of
interest not only to educators, but also to those interested in child welfare, family studies, social issues, and
children's literature. Literary sources will be emphasized. An interdisciplinary approach
will be used.

DEAN OF
MEMO
STUDIES CffW*
TO:
Bruce Clayman, Dean of Graduate Studies
FROM: Ralph Stanton (Library Collections Management Office)
RE:
New Course Proposal EDUC 839-5 (Robin Barrow memo of
May 25, 1992)
DATE: 30/10/92
I have examined the Library's holdings for EDUC 839-5
(Western Perspectives on Childhood, Child-Rearing and
Education). This 5-unit-course will be offered annually to-
15 students and will be offered for the first time in the
second semester of 1993.
The average price of titles in this classification is $48.50
All prices cited are average prices derived from statistics
kept by major book suppliers.
There is no text listed on the course proposal form; if a
text is chosen the Library would like to be informed. .A
well constructed bibliography of 64 items is appended to the
form. The Library does not have 6 items one of which is the
periodical History of Childhood Quarterly; the Education
Department should decide on the need for this title in the
course of their serials review. The other five items must
be purchased at a cost of $242.50. One other item, Locke's
Some Thoughts Concerning Education, needs to be purchased in
the Peter Gay edited edition, $48.50.
Many other items in the bibliography are already in high
demand for other courses, so added copies should be
purchased; 10 items are in this category, the cost is
$485.00.
The Library's holdings in most general subjects covered by
this course are comparable to or slightly better than other
libraries in our peer group. Some topics such as child
abuse, drug abuse, children and sex, as well as child
rearing need strengthening but should be adequate to support
the initial offering of this course.
