Last fall the support of the Faculty of Science, Senate and
the Board of Governors was given to a proposal put forth by the
Physics Department for the establishment of a Summer School in
Solid State Physics associated with Simon Fraser University.
The success of the summer school is evident in the enclosed
financial statement and memorandum from Dr. Flaering.
A similar request for support of the 1968 Summer School
in Solid State Physics was brought before the Faculty of Science at
its meeting of September 26th, and the following motion was
unanimously carried:
That the Faculty approve fully the admirable
initiative of the Department of Physics in
their proposal, and recommend to the President
and Senate that support be forthcoming from
the University.
Would you please bring this matter before Senate under
Other Business at the meeting of October 2nd.

Solid State Physics
As you know our department recently completed the first
summer school in Solid State Physic.. The budget for
this venture came entirely from external grants as the
enclosed Financial Statement will indicate. You will
note that we, in fact, managed to achieve a $2,000
surplus which will be carried forward to the
1968
Summer School.
Some additional revenues are to be
expected when the book arising from the proceedings
appears in print. This book is being published by
Gordon and Breach and is entitled "The SimonFraser
University Lectures in Solid State Physics - Volume 1 -
Electrons in Metals".
I am presently in the process of raising funds for the
1968
Summer School. I have every reason to expect
that I shall again succeed in raising all of the
necessary funds from external sources. Nevertheless,
the results of my applications will not be known for
some months and in order to assure a successful
program it is necessary to commit outstanding lecturers
before the outcome of grant applications is known. I
would-therefore like to request that the university
guarantee the cost of the
1968
program permitting the
Physics Department to use funds from its budget in the
event that a sufficient amount of money cannot be
raised externally. It is to be understood that the
Physics Department shall not cover the cost of the
program in its 1968
Budget and that any use of
university funds would imply a corresponding cut-back
in expenditures elsewhere in the Physics Budget.
You will remember that our department made a similar
• request last year and that this request was granted.
I would be grateful if you could put the above item on
the agenda of Faculty or Science in order that we may
seek faculty approval.
Yours sincerely
